ParticipantAnything would work better than what we have now, which is Confused Driver Ave.
I agree, we should first try lots of paint, and more/bigger signs. If that doesn’t work, a flex post may work better, but the point should still be to keep these idiots off the trail. I refuse to share MUPs with cars. Considering how much press drivers on the W&OD gets (Ok, mostly because there are sometimes serious injuries from drunk idiots
), this is happening quite a lot and virtually no one talks about it.
This last incident on Sunday, the driver drove Commonwealth to the circle, paused, then made the right turn onto the trail and continued as if everything was ordinary. When he got to Rt 1, he paused again, drove off the curb to the side street, then into the car dealership. It was a Volvo S80, with Maryland plates. Prior to all of this the moron passed me awfully close going down Commonwealth considering the other lane was empty.

ParticipantExcellent questions. I’ll check all of that, but I fear the results. I did get a new rear wheel relatively recently. A Velocity Chukker. I can’t recall if this problem was coincidental, but would make sense if the wheel is just not stiff enough. That would be preferable to a frame crack!

Participant1) To the driver of the car with the coconut sized balls pulling Idaho stops at the stoplights along Eye St. SW and Maine Ave, you can go to hell. You need to have your license revoked too.
2) To the wench on the phone who right hooked me at Commonwealth and Glebe Rd in Arlandria. You can go to hell too, you oblivious POS. I hate you.

It does mean a 100kph limit actually, pretty crazy. Not sure why it’s so high there. Where did you see the picture of the sign?
Probably a mile or so in. Going out of town the speed limit increases to 60, then 70, then 100. While riding on a major country road, seeing the speed limit 55 mph sign usually gives me the chills because you know cars are going 60+. But at least those roads are usually not very curvy and have a small shoulder unlike this one. Sheesh.
From the streetview, this climb looks like a ginormous version of Sugarloaf, but maybe it’s more of a busy highway, than off-the-beaten-track mountain park?
The vegetation is all weird too!

Oh, whoops! I must have missed that thread. Nice. Of course the link is blocked here at work….

Just replace kangaroo/wallaby with deer, possum with squirrel/raccoon, and, wombat with… badger? skunk? I dunno.
This is the segment by the way. Nothing like that here
3500+ft in 10 miles.
http://www.strava.com/segments/375795What does a white sign with 100 in a red circle mean? Certainly not 100 kph right?? That’s super fast for that road.

And yes, need to feed the child, so 10 beer maximum!
If you get them drunk enough you could just mug them on the way home and they’d be none the wiser. You would probably come out ahead in that case.

Have you seen the forecast for this weekend?
Yeah! May be a great opportunity (*) to boost those single digit temperature miles!

Uppity has a racist past. Use it at your peril.
Really?? I did not know that. I assumed it was slightly classist, but the lady was wearing a big-ass fur coat and driving a shiny Mercedes, so it seemed appropriate.
My apologies if anyone now assumes I am racist. Who was it used against?

Planning to talk to the Hills of Anacostia organizers about this.
Have you heard from the folks at Bicycle Space yet? I don’t think I want to attend another ride if there’s a chance I’ll get a trespassing citation. Instead, to bag another hill they could just go up Suitland Rd. and back down without changing too much of the current route.

I do think it’s funny that people are getting all bent out of shape because they can’t chase KOMs in some cemetery.
It’s not about riding in a cemetery exactly. Certainly not about “chasing KOMs”. It’s more about escaping the city for a few minutes to ride on nice, quiet, car-free roads. Cemeteries are basically parks, and I think it’s a real shame that we designate some of the nicest urban parkland for the dead, and exclude the living. Especially ones that don’t serve some ‘higher’ purpose like Arlington, which is more like a massive military memorial. And since many of the parks in this area are situated right next to highways, they’re not exactly quiet. MVT being one big example.
But anyway, I’ve only ridden in it twice, and ridden past it dozens of times, so I guess it’s no big loss. I know the local Navy folks used to run through it for their PT, but I assume they’ve been booted out too.

This morning, a minister at the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery along Suitland Road, stopped me. She told me bikes are not allowed in the cemetery and she would call security and the police if I did not leave. I said nothing but just turned around. She also added she was tired of bikes in the cemetery and is planning to put a stop to it.
Dislike the uppity ministers and such who plan to put a stop to riding in “their” cemeteries.

ParticipantThe last Hills of Anacostia ride I did a couple of weeks ago, some angry lady was pulling into the cemetery as we were about to cross Suitland Rd from one section to the other. For every one of us that passed by she honked her horn and yelled at us that bikes are not allowed. Now who is the disrespectful annoying person? The small group of cyclists? Or the dumbass honking her horn and being belligerent?
**For that matter – there is a sign that says “no bikes” or something. I don’t know how legitimate it is. But yeah, the HoA ride may need to change a little. I think exploring some hills at the arboretum could be fun.
I can check the sign tomorrow to get the exact wording.

There will sometimes be days when you need studded tires for the streets in Arlington. Last year, the streets in Rosslyn were ice covered for a few days, let alone neighborhood streets elsewhere. Thinking that you’ll be guaranteed to ride everyday without studs is unrealistic.
Of course. But also, a 2-inch snowstorm, shouldn’t take the trails out of commission for weeks as the freeze-thaw cycle transforms the snow into a dangerous layer of ice.
I’ve visited my brother in MN in the winter. I didn’t see any of the bike trails, but I did see perpetually snow covered roads. It seemed to me that people just get used to driving on packed snow for much of the winter. It’s ok though because all of the ice is on the lakes and not on the roads or trails. Dry snow isn’t thaaaaat slippery on its own. It’s the ice that sucks. In MN, it’s often so cold that salt doesn’t work, and a thin layer of snow cannot be plowed away so you just drive on the snow. No big deal.
