Great tires, but they are way too narrow for my purposes. Otherwise I’d gladly take them.

To any prospective new owners who have not used puncture resistant tires before, I think you’ll love these.

    Wow, very cool!

I’ll have to add Michigan to my list of places to visit to escape DC summers. Next year I think we’re all set for Maine, but Montreal, Ottawa, Adirondaks, Wisconsin, Minnesota and now Michigan are all on my list.

    There’s your problem right there.

Eh… I learned to drive on stick shift cars. They were great. That was in central PA though. I now live inside the beltway, which is a traffic hellhole, and the one place that stick shift sucks is in stop and go traffic. It’s annoying as f*&^. And as much as I like to bike, I still have to drive a bit, hence the automatic transmission.

15mph on signs means 22mph in practice

The speed limit on the Suitland Federal Center is 15mph and Steve is entirely correct – I find that it is physically difficult to make my car drive less than 20 mph. Around 15 mph, the engine is in first gear and it’s racing (wasting gas too). Go slightly faster and it shifts to 2nd gear and automatically wants to go 20+, so I’d have to ride the brakes to go 15, which I’m not going to do.

I don’t know how many people feel like they have to dress like a racing cyclist to ride a bike. Maybe the Lance effect is in effect there?

The answer to that is simple: Functionality. No one (edit: no males) look good in bike shorts and weird jerseys with pockets in the back. It’s not a style thing for the vast majority of us. I don’t race. I’m actually pretty darn slow according to strava segments, but for my long rides and fairly long commute I need padded shorts and light weight non-chafe lycra. For long weekend rides, I also like having stuff I need in the back pockets of my jersey. The best tools for the job.

    Simple.

If it wasn’t functional I don’t think people would “dress like a racing cyclist” – including racing cyclists.

You’ve read the article before. No facts. Anecdotes about that one jerk cyclist. Roads are for cars. Complete waste of time.

Also using the statistics that cyclists die on the roads to say that cyclists don’t belong on the roads… I wonder how many drivers have died on Boston’s roads in the same period that 13 cyclists did??

None of those are in Pentagon City, Crystal City or Potomac Yard. That’s why. HTO is/was the closest shop to me. The former City Hub was also nearby, but that’s closed. I don’t choose a bike shop based on whether or not it’s part of a chain or not. I chose HTO because they were much more convenient than any other place in the area for me.

A bike shop in Gallery Place, Capitol Hill, Logan Circle, etc. is not convenient for people in Pentagon City/Crystal City. If something is broken on the bike, it wouldn’t be practical to ride to those locations.

When I lived in Crystal City I went to Spokes Etc up on Quaker Lane. It’s ~4 miles away, which I agree isn’t ideal for biking to the shop and leaving it, but it’s not terrible. Maybe wear your running shoes just in case.

Also, with how busy the service dept at that Spokes is all the time.. I can’t imagine that there isn’t room for another mechanic/service shop somewhere in PC/CC/PY area. Especially with all the new high density housing coming into Potomac Yard!

Yesterday I hadn’t planned on riding 20 miles. I just sort of happened. I was on a quest to find root beer beer, which our local Safeway had, but ran out of before we could get it–so I rode to 3 different Safeways. (No dice in the end :() Then I needed to go shoe shopping and figured biking to G-town would be fastest… when they didn’t have what I needed I biked to Pentagon City… and so on.

It’s smalltownbrewery or something right? They have it at Costco in Pentagon City if you’re in the mood for a case of it. I’d buy a 6-pack, but a case is a lot considering how sweet it is. If you want to go halfsies on a case or something let me know. Haha.

I had to work this weekend, so no riding. But I did just make up a plan for a version of the Whites Ferry loop next weekend though.

It’s ridiculous that news editors and reporters still call assaults like this “accidents”. Maybe just force of habit, but this was no mere accident.

Super glad they have the guy in custody, but this is not the first incident in that area. I think I’ll not do any recreational rides over there for the time being.

It’s a shame he could be in such a bad Moody while behind the wheel.

Me: Del Ray, riding down the steep part of Mt. Ida to bear right onto Sanford.

You: Driver who pulled up to the stop sign on Sanford who waited for me to pass you. When you realized that I was turning right, you angrily screamed out your window “Signal!”

First) Screw you! Second) No! I will not pull my hand off of the bars going down a steep hill on terrible, bumpy pavement just so I can signal a right turn to you. In fact, the only signal that was appropriate in that situation was after the fact when you got the bird. Third) If I had $1.00 for every driver who caused me to unnecessarily wait 2 seconds or more because they were too lazy to signal a turn, I’d have my own island by now, and I wouldn’t have to deal with dicks like you.

Just looking for a confirmation of my suspicion there are no good crossing into Anacostia from the river trail into Ward 7/8. The best one is on the Northern side of Penn, it it is pretty bad having to cross the on & off ramps from Rt 295. The crossing at Benning & Minn is even worse.

Is there a reason DDOT just decided not to put a cross-walk and curb cuts at the off ramp from 295 to west bound PA Ave? They’re there on the other side on the 295 on-ramp from westbound PA Ave. It’s so stupid!

I hate that whole area. Like you said, getting to the trail is easy enough, but the rest of it has clearly just been neglected and terribly designed.

On Saturday a guy was trimming back at least one of the bushes along the MVT around the airport. Since he was wearing running shorts & a t-shirt with neither an NPS or contract landscape company vehicle in site I’m assuming it was likely a guerilla pruning.

I didn’t realize how bad it was until it was trimmed back recently, but the Mt. Vernon – 4 Mile Run intersection had terrible sight lines until recently. Significant safety hazard for people bearing left onto 4 Mile Run from MVT. If it was a guerilla pruning I’ll gladly buy the person a beer for helping out.

I noticed the bushes encroaching the trail just south of the train bridge over the Potomac were also pruned back a lot.
