I too have experienced the “I own this road” attitude from motorists. My experience is that the road is no place to have a nuanced discussion or an argument. I have gotten to the point where I just give a thumbs up instead of some obscene gesture. Shuts them up everytime. Most disputes come out of an irrational sense of extreme impatience anyways. If logic and truth were important, no one would be upset at cyclists. There is no good reason why, but asking why will not work.

I’m working, otherwise I’d infiltrate. But, have you considered sticking to the Maryland side of the river until WW Bridge? MLK Jr Blvd shouldn’t be too bad on a Saturday…

MLK is a good suggestion. There’s some really nice hills over there too, my favorite:)

Anyone interested in a century this weekend?

I’d be willing to do a Saturday long ride, I’m not going to promise a century.

Yesterday, as I was heading southbound on the College Park Trolley Trail in the rain, I approached the elevated crosswalk at Berwyn Road. I could see that a car was coming, but appeared to be slowing down for me, so I entered the crosswalk and made myself as visible as possible. I got half-way across, then suddenly realized that the car was not in fact slowing for me, but slowing for the cross-walk bump. They blew through right in front of me, I had to slam on the brakes to stop in time. I think I got lucky on this one.

To top it off, the very same motorist turned onto the road that parallels the trail and then crossed the trail again, this time the driver stopped for me and, yes looked embarrassed. Hopefully the lesson was learned. I have certainly learned my lesson, never trust driver’s ability to see in the rain, and yes I usually try to make eye contact, but visibility was poor in this case.

I do! I was deployed on the USCGC Polar Star for Jan-Feb last year for Operation Deep Freeze 2016. I work at the National Ice Center as an ice analyst so I helped them with operational support to clear a channel in the ice to resupply McMurdo. It was a pretty amazing trip! These 2015 patches were what I gave out for my pointless prize last year. Unfortunately the CG never got around to making ODF2016 patches so I could have one for myself. But I thought something similar might make a cool prize for the coldest rides during FS.

Sweet. I was at MCM in the 2006/2007 season on a research team for 3 months. That year it was the USCGC Polar Sea that helped break out the channel. I remember watching it from Hut Point every evening as it slowly made its way in. We got to go aboard and meet the crew, really exciting when the ship finally comes in.

That patch is an awesome FS prize! I might have a couple of USAP patches tucked away somewhere.

Any other interest?? I would need at least a dozen or so to be on the hook for that amount of money. The patches would look similar to below… however, instead of Antarctica would have a snowflake, and instead of the North arrow a bike wheel of sorts, and with different wording obviously. Walter is going to help me design something, since I have no skills at that.

I want one. Do you have an Antarctica connection? Or is that just an example.

Greenbelt, we need you to rewrite our company’s safety policies for bikes. Those are awesome floodwater guidelines.

We are not a team of superstars, but a team of equals. So we can cover each other when life gets in the way of riding constantly (which it shouldn’t).

I’ve been trying to come up with a strava art idea to express my displeasure at the events that will be happening this Friday. I was originally going to try and map out a frowny face, but I live in NW DC near the zoo, and there aren’t too many curved roads for me to use for my task. I was just playing around with the street grid near Tenleytown (using the gmap pedometer website) and came up with this ride idea instead. Thoughts? :) Anyone else plotting any interesting strava art for the big day?

I live in Tenleytown and was also looking to do some sort of inauguration protest Strava Art. Do you mind if I try your proposed route on Friday? I’d love to try it and am new to Strava art.

Thanks for the invite, I promised my wife I’d go on a hike with her today. Not nearly as fun as biking and noodles, I know.

As far as a team name, there are 11 of us, so why not team 7-11? We can fill our bottle racks with Slurpees.
