    That’s…actually a pretty darn good idea….

Schoolwork has crushed my weekends and, by extension, my CX season. I have spent too much time indoors this fall and nothing short of a catastrophic injury will keep me from this race!

Side note: I’ll celebrate the end of the semester doing Rustbucket Races in Norfolk at a disused municipal facility on Saturday the 16th if anyone else is interested: https://www.bikereg.com/rustbucketraces

I have, through mindless force of habit, said “On your left” while walking past someone on an escalator.

I would sometimes get a grinding/purring when I put a new chain on my fixie but didn’t change the cog, but I’ve never had that happen with a cassette, no. But perhaps those three cogs of your cassette are the ones you used most often so they are the ones more worn.

And thank you for playing Stump the Chump.

Could be; I was wondering if it may be an issue of breaking in the chain, so to speak, but I can’t think of a time when I’ve had to do that before. If FFX_Hinterlands advice doesn’t pan out, I’ll just move out on a new cassette…probably a little overdue for one anyway.

    Thanks!

Could it be loose pedals, loose chain ring bolts or play in bottom bracket?…. Did you check for stiff links when you put the chain on?

Good call — I should probably be checking these more than I currently do. I’ll take a look when I get back home.

The cycle track is basically open to the public at this point. Wasn’t really crowded tonight, but I’m definitely sticking with my prediction that it will be a pain in the ass to ride for much of the day. Oh, and watch out for turning cars!

Nice clip! Looking forward to riding in on it tomorrow morning!

I bet it’s obvious, but what is the PBL? I’ve only just started commuting into the jungle that is D.C. proper and haven’t seen that one. If they’re repaving Maine Ave on the 3rd, I should study up!

I was pretty happy to see that they filled in the manhole-sized pothole on the WB lane close to the fish market. I think I heard cries for help coming out of it once!

There’s gonna be a phase 2? Guess I’ll get a black beret, some cigarettes, and some jazz records…more of that stuff is sure to generate another poem or two…

Sounds like you may be working out some deeper issues through your “poetry” beyond bicycling :D

I suppose I’m still miffed about the flat tire I got the other day which I suspect was from running over some debris on my way in. That and I’m staring out the window at a perfectly beautiful day and I’m itchin’ to get back out there.

I’ve been using one of these for about 4 years, at various points stuffed into a backpack and pannier (mostly backpack though). Every day, I fold up pants and shirt, then throw in undershirt/socks/underwear. I keep my shoes at the office, but the Pack-It is small enough that I have enough room for shoes or other items like lunch.

Just a quick follow up. I got this for my birthday and started using it for my pants and shirt. Also took Judd’s advice on the non-iron shirts, but even with the er, “iron” shirts, it does the job quite well! I needed to start using a bigger backpack to fit the pack it, but it’s done a great job of keeping my clothes more or less winkle-free.

    Thanks for the advice TwoWheelsDC!

Only things that concerns me about that left turn is traffic volume on Boundary Channel Drive around 6:30 – 7 am. Any insights on this? Thanks for the parking lot tip!

I guess its not that much of a problem if this is the preferred, most practical route to the MVT among commuters?

Hey gpk, welcome to the area! My last posting was at the Pentagon and I would commute to/from there often. The connector isn’t too bad at those hours (I usually arrived slightly before then). I would come in from Crystal City along Boundary Channel and found that B.C. was more of a traffic challenge than the connector itself.

It’s a quick dash from the connector to LBJ park and as long as you’re well lit, my experience has been that it’s a fairly safe ride. Once you’re in the park it’s an easy trip to the 14th street bridge.

The Crystal City route is also safe; however, as you pass under the bridge heading toward Long Bridge Park I recommend staying in the left lane as the road is all tore up under there. Once on the east side of the underpass, a few lanes merge into one seemingly ungoverned traffic mess which fortunately never seems too busy. Once you’re in Crystal City the bike lanes and sharrows are well adhered to (in my experience). Biggest threats IMO are car doors. Join up with the MVT and enjoy the scenery. I think it’ll tack on about a mile or so vs. going through LBJ Park.

At any rate, no matter which option you choose, odds are you’ll see other cyclists nearby and the more I ride in the area the more I realize that most of them are happy to take you on their wheel to where you need to go. Never hurts to do a dry run on the weekend either….

Again, welcome to the area. This forum got me started in bike commuting and I hope you have many enjoyable rides ahead of you!

    Cheers,
    CT
