It also has a strap that stabilizes the bike closest to your trunk

That alone sounds worth it. I’m semi in the market for a hitch rack myself. Yesterday I had the bike on the trunk rack (which doesn’t attach so well to the flat back of an SUV), and this morning I discovered my bike rear rack had cracked clear through. I imagine it was from bouncing when it was on the rack. although I can’t imagine, as I thought I’d strapped it down pretty well. At any rate, a stabilizer strap.

Sure, if you don’t mind jogging a bit south to the PA ave cycletrack, that’ll put you at 6th and PA ave at about 6:50pm. I’ll be waiting outside the Newseum wearing a bright (very bright) orange jersey. -Jeff

    K. I’ll be at 6th & Penn at 6:48. Blue jersey half obscured by a bright light green vest. See you there.

The famous Colmar Manor (did I miss my turn?) detour!

So are you heading back to the car tonight? I’m headed that way at 7pm — I leave from the Newseum at 6th and PA Ave — if you want company. -Jeff

I am, and I’d love the company, but I couldn’t start that late. I am planning to leave from 17th and L at 6:40. Can you leave any earlier?

My dream Rail-with-trail would be a path from the Manassas National Battlefield, through Mannassas city and along the CSX (historic Orange and Alexandria) rail right of way through Manassas park, Clifton, Burke, Springfield, to Olde Town alexandria. Call it the O&A trail. Imagine a direct off-road route to Clifton? Imagine riding out from Alexanria to the Port City Brewery on a protected rail trail? Imagine the commuter benefits of a direct path from Burke and Springfield to Alexandria. Connections to Holmes Run, MVT, Wakefield/Accotink trail network, and maybe even an extension from the battlefield north toward Sterling and Ashburn and the W&OD. Talk about a nice bike beltway.

    This would be my dream.

LOVE it! Especially the brewery mention! Good luck getting it by M-sas/PWC though. They don’t seem very bike friendly in those parts.

Muirkirk worked nicely. and it gives me an option to Marc back this evening.
    1. The roads from there were pretty beat up. Here’s the route I ended up on: http://www.endomondo.com/workouts/208244594/7155990 When the bike lanes finally started on RI I got excited, but then realized that I had to watch out for potholes and ridges as much or more than before.
    2. The trails were great once they straightened out, but all the curve seemed more like a leisure trail than a commuter trail. (Four mile run rather than W&OD for the Virginia folk).
    3. There was a couple sections of the trail with rocks on the side: blood waiting to happen.
    4. Trail signage was cute but not friendly. It was a pain! I probably still would’ve gotten off route, but slowing to strain to read the signs really wasn’t fun.
    5. RI all the way in from there? I got tired of trying to follow all the turns, and was ready to roll more, turn less. I wouldn’t have picked the trail system if I was mapping it myself, but glad I took it.

Muirkirk MARC Parking lot? what time are you going to arrive?

Closer to 5:30a…. A MARC lot could do. They’re free, right?

In my mind, you want a location that is 20 miles from Farragut Square towards BWI.

What about parking at Patuxent River Park and riding in and back?

I’m not sure about parking at places like that, but they have spots on the map!

Let us know what you end up doing!

Exactly! Now if somebody knows a commuter lot in the area, or at least somewhere I won’t get towed. or ticketed. preferably.

If you upload rides done on a stationary bike, please designate them as indoor rides.

Does a stationary bike even count? I’m in Myrtle Beach for the weekend with ready access only to a stationary bike, and I was slowly watching my rank slide lower… but if a stationary counts…!

So why is this HH thingie only once a month? I was pretty bummed not to make it. And I motion (see arms in motion) to at least have it twice a month. Seconds? I need a refill!!

I was on the Custis just after 6 outbound. It was super crowded. And too many different paces. An accident waiting to happen. Is it always that bad?

I was out of town for work for 5 days last week and brought my Brompton with me. 5 day business trips are the worst with no bike!

I’m picking up my first folding bike tonight in Sterling, just in time for the trip south to the in-laws for the weekend. I wish I could put a Brompton in the budget, but that’s not happening before a major pay raise. Meanwhile, I’ve been trolling Craigslist for months for a cheap folding bike. And that explains why you won’t see me at happy hour tonight. but I do hope to show it off tomorrow at Friday coffee. Maybe we can find a Friday morning happy hour? Beer before work? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

Please provide details on the award. Yeah I know it is a year’s worth of TP but I’ve mused on the logistical arrangements. Is it a big honkin’ box in your basement, a monthly shipment, or a book of coupons that can be used at the local store? And how do they know how much you use? Some previously undisclosed aspect of the NSA PRISM program we have been hearing about?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

As of yet, I have NO IDEA! Seeing the prize board this morning was the first – and so far only – notice I’ve had of the prize so far.

    @Rod Smith 55003 wrote:

Great job, Pete! Undoubtedly the most coveted prize available. I’m glad it went to one of our top ranked riders. You earned it! Another Bike Arlington All Star, Jesse Bullinger won a set of lights. Congrats, Jesse!

Peter, if you would. and thank you!

To Jesse: you do know that TP > Lights in rock/paper/scissors, right? Anybody can see that TP wraps around lights till you can’t see the light anymore!! :D

Add personal story: I wiped out on the wood bridge just north of Old Town a few years ago. Then they resurfaced the bridge, and it totally looked life it had more traction. Being cautious, I still took it carefully, but not slowly enough. And the extra traction laughed as I wiped out. I’ve also wiped out going about 0.08 mph over a manhole cover. Slow, straight, and steady. And of course avoid if possible!
