Wait. Seriously? You got tagged for running a red at 4:00 a.m. ? That’s nonsensical enough that it’s pretty funny. Good for you paying and moving on though. That’s one of the reasonings in the back of my head about going through reds safely: even if I get a ticket, it’s still worth it in terms of the years of beating traffic I’ve enjoyed.

Yep. Credit to you, CCrew. My eventual charges in that situation would have resulted in something involving the phrase “Are you )(@#@# kidding me?!”.

That “Are you $%#@ kidding me?” was EXACTLY my response.

I brought it on my own self. I was coming down M street and hit the red light at Wisconsin. The right turn lane there is tight and filtering left can be a bit dodgy even at that time of the am because the cabs run through there like idiots. I pulled up into the crosswalk, looked both ways, nothing coming so I went for it. Middle of the intersection I realize it’s a DC cop sitting at the opposite light. I hammered it, he banged a U-turn and that was that. I did the crime, I paid the fine. Simply couldn’t see going into court to try to beat it when in reality I had done exactly what I was charged with.

I still run it and a few others just for safety in positioning. I just look closer now! $170 bux stung a bit writing that check.

Son got a speeding ticket on my tri bike last year in Winchester for 37 in a 25. We took that one to court and won. That was just plain funny. It’s framed on his bedroom wall.

. This is hands down the worst intersection I deal with on a semi-regular basis. If there are others, let me know. I’d like to start a summer tour of disaster and peril.

The great Wiehle Avenue bowling lanes?

And if you get a chance to ride out that way, Belmont Ridge Road and the W&OD intersection can be sheer joy.

Wait, this wasn’t a West Virginia joke?

No, bears have teeth. In WV alligators are the animal of choice anyway

Huh. So the text on the warning says regarding stop signs: “All persons riding a bicycle on a sidewalk or public highway shall stop at all stop signs.”

Let’s take it a step further though. Is it a MUP or a sidewalk. If there’s not another law that ties a MUP to being a sidewalk you *might* be able to successfully argue that that law doesn’t apply. It is signed as a “trail”

Now that said, if they cite you for the more generic “failure to obey a traffic control device” then you may be up poops creek.

I’m happy with just tripping the redlight cameras every morning at Fairfax and Glebe.. I got my $170 ticket in the district for running a red on the bike (at 4AM!!), paid it and licked my wounds.

Any lock can be beaten. For the most part it’s about making them obvious or slowing them down. U-Locks are the best.

But even the best of u-locks lasts 15 seconds to a thief with a battery powered cutoff grinder.

I also ordered a pair of Zoic Ether shorts, which had good reviews and were on sale.

I have them in a light tan color. Those were what made me recommend them. Love them.

I ride regardless. I just take it easier (assuming I can afford to do so) and keep the route direct.

Same here. That said, it was a nasty ride home due to the air quality. I was on the pavement @ 2:30

I wear a HR monitor that mates to my Garmin, when it starts climbing into the 150’s at times I know normally it’s no more than 130 or so It’s pretty obvious the effect the heat/air has.

One you can miss…. Keep in mind these opinions on what I’m posting are subjective, your mileage may vary.

Allegheny Highlands Trail (Not to be confused with the Great Allegheny Passage!)

Did this trail two years ago, and in a nutshell would never go back. Barely maintained, grass almost as high as the bike. Imagine a scenic trail through the back yards of many of the trailer parks in WV and you’ll be right at home here. By far the most unimpressive rail-trail I’ve ever been on. Between the chasing dogs, bad trail conditions, and the almost total lack of maintenance definitely a “must miss” on my list.

I don’t see that one working either. Seem to both go to the same place.

They just moved mine from last week and made it bigger :)

I just dodged to the right of the new one this am.

Forgot a good one for day tripping. This is one the kids will think is really cool also.

Breezewood PA – Pike to Bike Trail

It’s an abandoned 9 mile section of the PA turnpike. Neatest part of it is that it has two tunnels one of which is about 1 1/4 miles long. We’ve been in it in July and there was ice in the center. The movie “The Road” was primarily shot here. If you’re into urban exploring it’s just cool, since it has an almost apocalyptic sense to it. I don’t recommend a road bike as some of the pavement has started to break up, but a MTB is somewhat overkill. Cross bike or Hybrid would be perfect. Definitely an out of the ordinary bike trail.
