Participant7 speed is going to make it difficult. Most Shimano based wheels are 8/9/10 with a few being 10 only.

I decided after last night’s ride that I need to buy some more candle power to make sure I don’t bump into someone’s dog or a jogger wearing all black.
Since 50% of my commute is in the dark of night now you understand why I run as much candlepower as I do. I’ve found that the helmet mounted light is the most effective of all, in that I can aim for the errant ninja yet look down or away to stop from blinding one that has the sensibilities to wear gear that can be seen.

Uh… July 2010
I didn’t say ya can’t call me “Dopey”
But for real. I have a Trek sitting in the garage whose owner has put 700 miles on. In Two years.

ParticipantSince July? That’s GREAT! congrats!
We won’t call you “warrior, survivor, and gift” like the tabloids are saying Paula Abdul is asking for though, sorry
CCrew
ParticipantUmmmmm Yeah. Would be hard to beat in the ugly department. Almost as bad as me in Lycra.

There is suspose to be a bike trail along the new ICC.
I was understanding that that was further east than Rockville though. I’ll find if I can get more info

Come on…don’t act like the worst of the drivers around here. I see comments like that about cyclists in the road all the time. It doesn’t help when you start acting like them.
I’d never harm them. And most are polite and move. The “I’m running where I damn welll please because I’m a pedestrian” ones? Fair game in my book.
Keep in mind I’m dealing with them in the wee hours of the am. Chicken involves 1200 watts of zombie scorching LED’s. 400 of which is on a helmet that I can aim at will. They move.

ParticipantHope you heal quickly!!
Painted lines = ice in the wet. Similar experience on the Custis, but at the west end where it goes under 66. Downhill into the tight left under the bridge and hit the line. Next thing I remember was someone trying to help me because I was knocked out cold. Seems I hit my head on the rail going down based on the marks and helmet. They fixed the dent in the rail the next day
Road rash and a slight concussion, but it was a lesson.

ParticipantAll the more justification as to why I play chicken with them.
Seriously, I do. They can have the W&OD, I give them right of way. The bike lanes? Not so much. Not when there’s an empty 10 foot wide sidewalk beside them.

ParticipantCross bike. Road geometry with larger tires to absorb the bumps.

You kids need to up your game, I’m turning 55 in a couple weeks.
CCrew
ParticipantDepends on the bike. My weight weenie carbon bike I run a 53/39 on and it’s perfect. Most of the rest have 50/34’s and I certainly can’t spin them out. Cross bike I had to give up on the 46/36 cross crank and put a 50/34 on it.
I’m 55, so age is subjective. I almost exclusively run big ring and tune the crank to that.

I recommend Magic Shine for light, bright and cheap and it works great.
Yeah it works, but between the battery recall and how they’ve left people with dead ones it wouldn’t be my first choice.

Actually, 50:19 is not a painful ratio. .
Clearly not in your 50’s like I am
My Langster Steel is running 42/16, but for some reason I can only take that bike for a limited time. Yet I pretty much never use small ring on any of my road bikes. I think the q-factor may be a bit tighter on the Langster, just rips my knees up pretty quickly
