Have you ever ridden the short section of Rt 7 from Round Hill to the top at 601 (Blue Ridge Mtn Road?) I usually end up going down Airmont/Snickersville to Bluemont, which is nice, but sometimes I want to avoid the extra leg. It looks fairly rideable, but I’ve never tried it.
It’s doable (I’ve done it), and I frequently see loaded tourers doing it. That said, the weekday 3-7pm rule applies here. If for no other reason than traffic in that right lane won’t have the opportunity to get over even if they want to. You have to hug the right line, but you’re really only talking about from the store where the covered wagon is to the base of the mountain before you pick up a wide shoulder again. From there to the other side of the Shenandoah river it’s wide shoulder, and then it narrows again to Berryville, and then after Berryville again for about 2 miles. Sight lines are pretty good – albeit not perfect so I’d obviously recommend hi-vis, but no one’s been hit in that stretch that I’m aware of and I see riders on it several days a week.

That was probably me…I rode out past Ashburn and was on my way back to Arlington.
I’ll wave hi next time
. You were looking like you were winding up for the slow climb into Vienna

ParticipantWOD to Rt 7 is about the best bet. Really no good way to get here (I live in Winchester) from there without contending with highways. Rt7 definitely better than 50.
Just try to not hit 7 on the afternoon rush (3-7pm) and it’s actually not that busy. Overall issue is that there really aren’t that many entries into the valley here so access routes are limited

We’re staying in the state/national campsites on Assateague Island. Never done either the century or the camping arrangement before, so we’ll see.
Take bug spray! Between the mosquitos and the green flies they’ll pick you up and carry you away on a bad day.

Well, never mind the W&OD
http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?1171-W-amp-OD-about-underwaterW&OD was certainly doable as of Friday. Some damage definitely, but only had to dismount the bike once.

Is that a technical term?
Yeah
If you know the area, you know when you come up to the bridge there are two rolling dips about 5′ deep about 50′ apart. They’re perfect for scrubbing your speed if you’re westbound before you hit the hill toward Hunter Mill

but we’re happier. I saw so many cars stuck in traffics everywhere. Today commute took only 5 minutes longer than a normal day commute.
I agree. I still averaged almost 16mph for the ride and the trail was pretty much a 2″-6″ river the entire way.

Dirt and I have a different definition of “early” — 3:00 a.m. is dark regardless of the season.
.3:00am isn’t early, I’m halfway to the office by then!! LOL

ParticipantCame through at 2:30 am. Reston to Tysons today. Trail’s sloppy but certainly clear, although there are some spots where there are big fields of slop washed into the trail. Hunter Mill Road is barricaded and taped off at the trail, but the trail goes through. Looks like the water made it over the trail at Difficult Run, one of the whoop de doo’s is almost washed out. Streams are back in their banks.
Big gravel field at Hunter Mill and the trail, be careful as it’s a tire sucking mess. Other than that certainly doable. Park & Ride at Reston drained but still full of cars – or are they now 4 wheeled aquariums now?

CCrew,
How is the W&OD trail from Vienna to Reston? Is it passable? I need to get to Reston.
Thanks.
It was passable when I came through, but barely. Difficult Run may be underwater, and it was close to the two whoop de doos. at the bridge towards Clarks Crossing where they’re already having erosion problems looked like that’s possibly going to undercut the trail.
Here’s the park and Ride:

I’ve taken a beating from co-workers that can’t believe I’ve ridden in in this.

riding through the water at full speed, fenders somehow magically keeping you dry.
I think Dirt would be cackling even if the fenders weren’t there!
