Yes, as a matter of fact, I do start planning vacations a year in advance. Doesn’t everyone?

Late response, but no. Given job pressure and schedules I get about 1-2 weeks to plan and execute.

cgreenh, what are you riding? the GAP trail surface is pretty good (fine crushed limestone, fairly well packed), and short of a skinny tired road bike you can ride most anything on it. We ride it frequently and my first choice is usually a cross bike with 30’s.

I use the Lock & Lock brand of containers when I want to transport food leak-free. So far, no leaks! They are like tupperware but have a silicon gasket and locking flaps on the sides.

Great for geocaching if lunch goes stale :)

*And we’ll just ignore the matter of the demonstrated skills of Arlington’s plowing crew on the streets. They must import them from Florida.

Oh come on Mark, I winter commute enough to know Arlington does an exceptional job of plowing.

Plowing all the snow off the road and into the bike lanes that is :)

After checking with NVRPA, they confirmed that they have a blower, not a plow and that they “won’t plow the trail, but in case of heavy snows we would blow the trail off after some days.” It’s not clear what this means; guess we’ll find out this winter.

    .

I thought there was a post here somewhere (Jan or so of this year) that they had gotten a plow back in February or so and the stance was they would plow after 2-3 days of a snowfall? Their blower isn’t gonna do squat, they use it for leaves if it’s the one I’ve seen recently.

I’m of the mindset that I’ll believe it when I see it, but I’m in year 4 of commuting and havent seen it yet.

Besides, I so want to build a Surly Pugsley or a Salsa Mukluk this winter and I NEED an excuse! :)

To the person who experienced a concussion….how long did it take before you were back to normal?

My daughter took a good strike to the head on concrete steps and suffered one and in all honesty she was every bit of two-three months before any semblance of “normal”. Lots of problems with dizziness and a “detached” feeling, not to mention bouts with nausea and severe headaches. For your sake I hope you don’t suffer the way she did.

That is a hurdle in CIVIL court when it comes to suing the woman who assaulted her with a car. Though I don’t see how based on this description of the incident, she could be found even 1% at fault for this crazy woman’s violent assault. Contributory negligence does NOT apply to criminal and motor vehicle law when she gets arrested for the multiple crimes she committed (reckless driving, aggravated assault, etc).

Agreed, but unless charged criminally and forced to make restitution all that’s left is a civil case. Criminal restitution would be limited to actual damages, pain and suffering would have to be addressed in a civil case. So what the OP is left with is accepting reimbursement for actual damages some of which may be payable to a medical insurance carrier since they would have first claim.

Put the person in jail and you get nada. Catch 22

I don’t know anything about triathlons but a friend of mine did this event this year and had a good time(fun, not fast).

It’s in Purcellville and instead of swimming in the river the swim snakes through a pool with a time-trial like start. They start you by estimated swimming speed, so that faster folks go first and the slow people don’t stack everyone up. It works in theory…

Anyway, an option if you’re interested and skeeved out by swimming in the Potomac.

Unless they broke it this year my son was holding the course record on that one. :)

-Be honest…how bad is swimming in the Potomac?

Swimming in black water (where you can’t see or reference the bottom) is a totally different experience than swimming in a pool. It can and does freak some folks out. Personally I think if I were you I’d look at getting in on some of the sprint tri’s just to get accustomed. There are a lot held at the GMU Fitness center in Manassas every couple of weekends in season.

Transitions can make or break a race, and it depends on whether you’re using a wetsuit or not as to how tough transition 1 is. T2 is usually much easier. Nice part is that they can certainly be practiced. Son got them down to under 45 seconds..

My son made Team USA for USAT two years ago, I’ve seen more than a few races :)

But to directly answer the Potomac question, you’re good until another arm grows out of your back :p

    I’ll pile in here…

The chain cleaning machines are alright, but you can get a lot better cleaning by putting a SRAM Powerlink (or similar) in the chain, and dropping the chain into a tupperware container of mineral spirits. Use two containers, put it in the first while you’re cleaning the rest of the bike, then agitate and put into the second container. This degunks the worst into the first container and the second remains clean. When the first get’s too ucky, replace it with the second container and clean/refill the first one to be the new second.

Mineral spirits are minimally flammable, and are essentially the carrier in WD-40. All you need is a quart of mineral spirits, a powerlink for each bike, two containers, and to make things easy Park tool makes a special plier for the links.

I can get 10 bikes done in an afternoon this way….

While on the bus subject.. noticed yesterday they’re refitting a lot of the FFX Connector busses with new 3 bike racks on the front instead of 2 bike ones.
