    Note the adult/infant swing combination.

The swing set is quite unique. I’ve never seen one like that.

    I missed a letter. I hope I don’t get penalized.

And I’m really hoping for a prize for most miles per park. I just don’t feel like splitting my rides into different rides.

Great minds think alike. I had actually thinking about recognizing most parks and most parks per mile. It has been interesting to see all of the different parks people are finding.

camiller, what’s the verdict on named subparks?

e.g. Robert Emmet Park, which apparently is part of Rock Creek Park (but disconnected from the main part of it).

From my perspective, it if is listed as a separate named park then it is a different park.

camiller, thanks for sponsoring this prize! It’s been a good incentive to take some little detours and explore a bit. And, it’s way cheaper than coffee is!

Josh, I’m glad you are enjoying your adventures on your bike. It has definitely helped me explore more of my area and learn new roads to ride on as I map out ways to locate new (to me) parks. I have also become more aware of parks as I ride around. Ride on…

Park question: Lyon Park Play Park (the park within the neighborhood Lyon Park in Arlington) is not owned by Arlington County.

It’s publicly accessible during daylight hours, so it’s good to go, right?

If it’s called a park and it’s accessible to the public then it sounds like a park to me.

As a park lover, I love this game. I love it so much that I started gaming the system as well by splitting up all my rides between parks so that they’re their own ride on Strava. It might kill my average mile per ride, but it’ll up my park finder count!!!

For clarification, do “Park and Ride”s count as parks? I mean, they’re publicly run, they’re infrastructure and they contribute to the environmental well-being by removing cars from the roads, right?!?  :p

Very innovative thoughts….. I would consider a “Park and Ride” lot to just be a designation of the type of the “parking lot” and not an actual park that can be counted in ParkFinder.

I’m glad you are enjoying the game. As I ride around searching for parks I am amazed at the number of parks that I was not familiar with in our area. I can understand how it is killing your average mile per ride. :)

Do I get bonus points for miles away from DC?

I like how you think! I had to google the park to see where it was located. Nice find!

Thanks camiller for posting this PP. I just started last week and having a destination park to visit makes the exploring fun.

JoM, I’m glad you like the PP. I agree with you. Some days I don’t have any ideas of where to ride and I get tired of doing the same old loops. Selecting a park is helping me to explore and find new places to ride my bike.

Seeing more pictures pop up in this thread of smiling faces without bikes in the frame.

The OP does state: “You must take a picture of your bike with the park sign.”

Not sure how lenient the Keeper of this Pointless Prize will be on this stipulation, but wanted to call it out so there aren’t disappointed Frozen Saddlites!

There is no requirement to post pictures on this thread. The requirement is to post pictures of the bike with the park sign on Strava. Sometimes, in addition to posting picture of my bike with the park sign, I have posted additional pictures of the park. I am assuming that is what is going on with some of the non bike and park pictures posted on this thread.

What about privately-owned parks that are open to the “public” and jointly managed with some public entity? Public-private partnerships are a key strategy to maintain and grow open spaces, especially in urban areas where market forces dictate build, build, build. IMHO all open spaces open to the public are worthy of support, where government purchases and management are not sufficient in the face of development pressures.
Many of the connector trails that people on bikes (and peds, scooters, etc) use on a daily basis flow throw privately owned real estate managed under public-private partnerships. Do we not want to support this?
I respectfully submit that the purpose of the open space, public access, be the discerning factor, and not the ownership model.

While I don’t disagree that open space is important and that there may be many models for ownership, finding just any open recreational space was not the intent of this game. The intent of the ParkFinder pointless prize was to recognize and locate our public national, state, regional and local “parks”. In that manner, everyone is on the same playing field and the “green space” is not subject to interpretation. This country has a lot of green spaces that are not called “parks”. We have wildlife refuges, wildlife management areas, national forests, natural environment areas and other similar entities. We also have private businesses that own and manage recreation areas (eg., various resorts and ski slopes). We also have county recreation centers, golf course and public schools grounds. Those open areas are not called ‘parks” and, in the spirit of the game, I am only looking for things that are “parks”. In addition, just because an entity has “park” in its name does not make it a “park”. An example being Woodmont Park Apartments in Alexandria.

I just want this to be a fun game. I, for one, am enjoying discovering new parks around me. I have found several new (to me) places to have a picnic, read a book, take a hike or play on the swings. My game-my rules. That being said, people are on the honor system to only submit items that meet the defined criteria as I cannot police everyone’s entries. Be safe, enjoy meeting up with people and enjoy riding your bike!
