Participant3/8/2021 Notable Women with achievement
I knew I was going to be on a long ride today with friends and would not have much of an opportunity to locate any notable women that would come to mind so I decided to research names that I would be able to find on our planned route. I was not familiar with Toni Morrison but after reading information on her I am planning on finding one of her books and learning more about her writing.
Toni Morrison was an American novelist, essayist, book editor, and college professor. She was the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Morrison was the author of 11 novels as well as children’s books and essay collections. Among them were celebrated works like “Song of Solomon,” which received the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977, and “Beloved,” which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. Her awards include Presidential Medal of Freedom, National Humanities Medal, Nobel Prize in Literature, and Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2019/08/06/books/toni-morrison-dead.amp.html

Cathy, I thought you’d seen all of the art in Reston! You must be a glutton for punishment!
Kelley, there is always more to see plus it gives me a destination for a ride and I am a glutton for punishment. (Looking at your route there are actually a few that I don’t think I have seen.)

Participant3/3/2021 Train
When I learned that I would be looking for a train today I knew I wanted to go the the Fairfax Station Historic Rail Road Museum. The original Fairfax Station (1851 depot) was predominantly constructed by the hands of Irish immigrants, many recruited not long after reaching the United States. Most settled in the Fairfax Station area. This influx of Catholics also led to the construction of St. Mary’s Church, located about one-quarter mile from the train station. Fairfax Station played an integral role in the Civil War and served the community of Fairfax for over 100 years. With the progression of transportation throughout the early to mid-1900s, the Southern Railway began closing smaller stations along its line. Fairfax Station, the last original operating train station in Fairfax County, closed in 1973. The depot remains in use today as a museum. While there is a rail car on site I really like their sign with the cutouts. The light was perfect today to see the detail in the sign.

I cannot believe I went out in the rain to take a picture of a Mattress store’s sign. I’m sure the workers thought I had lost my mind and needed a new mattress to get a better night’s sleep so I wouldn’t do something so crazy.

ParticipantMelville/ Middle Ridge Wormhole
This wormhole allows you to use a quieter road (Melville Road) instead of the Fair Lakes Parkway and then cross over to another quiet road (Red Admiral Way to Federal Systems Park Drive) and bypass more of Fair Lakes Parkway. This does not show up as a trail on Google Maps but there is a dirt trail that goes between the two roads.

ParticipantThis dual, separated sidewalk and multi-use trail only goes for a short distance on Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston but it was like a breath of fresh air when I came upon it. Note the bike parking on the left.
