ParticipantLet it be known that the Unexpected Maryland Inquisition isn’t going down without a fight. From the Desolation (nice stout, not too much oak, very nice coffee flavor, keeps the flavor of the espresso, of course I’d like it, one and you’re done) to the bent circles of Hell (try the Ella DIPA, very floral, a good sipper…and their mascot’s cool), there is no brewery beyond our reach.
Beermakers of the Washington Area: be warned. The Inquisition is coming, and we will not be denied.

ParticipantSo I think I may need this to go with my spiffy red uniform…

I have never ridden at the Arboretum. Maybe I should skip Oxen and go there Saturday post Hills of Anacostia.
Dear Sweet Eduardo.* You have missed out. I mean, it’s pretty cool in the winter and all (and the bonsai museum is always worth a look), but come back in May when one of the hills is covered in thousands of azaleas in more colors than you thought possible. Or earlier in the spring, when the trees are blooming. Or autumn, for the foliage. Or high summer, for the wildflowers. Or…
You get the idea. Varied scenery, good hills, low traffic, and great places to stop and smell the camellias.

Hills of Anacostia is a nice ride. Riding east of the river is actually quite pleasant and groups of riders always get cheers and friendly greetings from the residents. Experienced riders will probably find it relatively easy as far as hill rides go, but there are plenty of ways to make it challenging (fixed gear!).
Frankly, I think if they wanted to make a killer ride, they’d do a “Hills of Northeast” ride…IME, with a few exceptions, the hills in NE are way more grueling…although I guess the views aren’t quite as good.
Yeah, the Hills ride isn’t too bad—but, then again, I like hills. And yes, they do miss some of the Fun ones, but so it goes.
As for a NE ride…Mt. Olivet Cemetery, the Arboretum and Hickey Hill, Ft. Lincoln, Ft. Lincoln Cemetery, Bunker Hill and Mt. Ranier, and finishing on Mt. St. Sepulchre in Brookland after climbing the ridge at Newton might make a good short and punchy ride; add on Mt. Stinky, Hawaii Ave NE, and that fun screaming descent down Rock Creek Church for a bit more. Maybe cut south to Howard (there’s a reason there are stairs on that campus), then up RIA to Lincoln and Prospect Hill?

One strategy, not necessarily cheating, is to find single guys or girls racking up too many points and fix them up. Eric Williams’ ride titled something like “I can only do these double centuries because I don’t have a girlfriend” gave me that idea.
Eric hold old are you by the way?
Sorry, no setting up our ringer until 21 March. His team captain forbids it.

Prize: Jumbo Shrimp?
Hmmm…would NPS let me shoulder my bike and do stair runup repeats of the Washington Monument?
Bruno Moore
ParticipantAh, but here’s the trick: the prize doesn’t go to the person left holding the bag at the end. It goes to the person 11 from the end. Or the one who was in the middle. Or something like that. Camping out on being “it” won’t work, overthinking things won’t either, but playing the game will.

ParticipantI think we lost it just in time for me to get back from my taco run.
Monday…

ParticipantDangit, the Inquisition was at Franklin’s on Tuesday.
We may have to drop by and convince them to name a beer “Heresy by Deed” for us.

ParticipantLet it be seen in all its glory.

ParticipantSpeaking of somebody else, we now have our tenth player—Msalemme—and are now a mere 58 points away from retaking the lead!
Cool factoid: 70% of cyclists on our team are female, compared to 24% nationwide.
Bruno Moore
ParticipantWe might be getting another person—someone who entered late, for instance. Or it might just be a way to try to keep things fair for the other, less generally awesome, teams.

Spoke too early before it included my lunch ride. We are now nine points ahead!

Hmmm…it seems we have a problem—someone else is nine points and one person ahead.
Time to fix this. Back in a bit.

ParticipantRent—I don’t know. Borrow—I don’t have a folder, but that doesn’t mean one of us doesn’t. Buy—we have a few at Proteus, if you want to have a look. Avoid the Whole Issue—Phoenix has a bikeshare system, though whether it goes where you are or want to be may be another matter entirely.
I’m increasingly surprised where dock-based bikesharing options are popping up; even Oklahoma City and Tulsa (where I grew up and went to school) have systems these days.
