ParticipantI once dropped my bike off at my LBS for a tune-up and forgot to leave the key, and the mechanic was able to get them off without the keys. I’m not sure what he did, but it’s probably safe to assume that your average thief won’t have the tools or know-how that he did. Still, it made me a little less confident in them, but I also haven’t had any problems with them.

ParticipantGlad to hear you’re OK, and I’m looking forward to seeing those mug shots when the machine comes online.

ParticipantI wasn’t sure how tall a “true” pennyfarthing might be, so I did an image search and found this awesome example:

ParticipantI suspect you’ve got all the info you need by now, but I’ll toss in one more for panniers. I hated having that weight on my back all the time.
While you’re at it, get yourself a decent cargo bungee net. I can’t find it on their site, but I got a Topeak at my LBS. I keep that attached to my rack at all times. It’s held up well to abuse, it hasn’t been stolen – and it’s cheap enough that I’m willing to risk it, because the utility is worth it. I use the thing all the time when I don’t expect to be picking anything up.
Great example: earlier this week we lost power, and it hadn’t come back on my the time I was headed home. I stopped at the grocery store and rode home with two 8-pound bags of ice strapped to the back, to save the stuff in my freezer.

See, now we need pics of THAT. Giddyup!

ParticipantAero Tech Designs carries a lot of big & tall gear.

Participant+1 for bib shorts. Fat guys, take note: WORTH IT. I wasn’t going to bother investing in them (I had regular bike shorts that I’d wear under gym shorts, since no one wants to see a fat guy in spandex) until I read another thread (maybe on the Q&A site) wherein one big fella recommended them to another. And that fella was right.

ParticipantBrilliant!
My summer project has been photo bombing tourists. It seems that every time I ride past a monument, there’s a bus full of people hanging out the windows to take pictures, so I slow down, stand up out of the saddle, and give them a big smile.

Do you mean the penny-farthing guy? I saw him riding on the Mt. Vernon Trail last summer. Apparently he rode that bike at the Air Force Cycling Classic-Crystal Ride last year. It’s possible that it really is his daily ride.

ParticipantI swung by BicycleSPACE on my way to Freedom Plaza, then grabbed breakfast at my local stop, NoMa – I work from home, so on Bike to Work Day I just go make a big circle.
My favorite part: saw a tall bike here in NoMa. I’m not sure where he was going, but I’ll bet that’s not his daily ride.

My thought on that as CaBi is greatly increasing the number of visible cyclists (greatly lowering the barriers to using a bike), and they don’t wear helmets, new cyclists will see that as the norm and it’s OK to not wear a helmet.
That’s a really good point. On the upside, everyone I talk to about biking is adamant about wearing a helmet – but then again, my friends are all slightly past the “just out of college and I’m INVINCIBLE” age. And while I am loathe to make the kind of sweeping generalizations that I was arguing against earlier in this thread, I very rarely see anyone over 30 riding without a helmet – it definitely seems to be more common for younger folks to forgo the brain bucket.

ParticipantI’ve got their (very similar) touring bike, the Long Haul Trucker, and love it. My only complaint is the bar-end shifters that both models come with standard. I occasionally bump into them with my knees when mounting/dismounting at stop lights, or bump them into things when leaning the bike against a rack to lock up. I think I’m going to stick with regular shifters in the future, but other than that, big fan.

ParticipantGyms are always negotiable. If you can, go in person and talk to the manager and explain that you only want their showers, and I’ll bet you can talk them into waiving the setup fee.
