They took the JOY letters down. The tree was barren.
I think the Nivlacball has been claimed and is currently in transit, if Strava is any indication

Someone from Maryland is going to need to get this one I think. Sarah? Rod? Brett? Millie? Dr evil?

You should be glad I didn’t see this this morning when I was down there. I might have moved it up to College Park or even Laurel!!!!! If DrEvil doesn’t want to be known as evil, I’ll take on that mantle.

ParticipantJust a reminder that Proteus will be riding down to Bar Roubaix this Saturday, leaving at 10am. Supposed to be extremely bike friendly and have good beer! It’s off 14th St in Columbia Heights, so we’ll be riding city roads to get there. Details posted here:

Oh well. That contest went over quite well. What is your six-pack of choice, Rod? lol, I’ll make sure I make them extra heavy for your ride back home after the happy hour. Unless Eric W. can manage a circular route longer, it looks like you have this one won. Or unless some cutie happens to post a ride a bit closer to a circle.
And I guess we’ll have to wait for the possible “eye” portion of the contest until the final happy hour.
*Edit* Ooops, didn’t realize that it wasn’t a real ride and only generated by ride with GPS. However, if anyone does this ride, I’m pretty sure you all will have to fight it out for that extra .1 mile to win the prize. That’s a pretty amazing circular route.
You almost got me, Rod!
Do I count as a cutie?

Well, based on the suggestions on this thread, I went out and bought a Schwalbe Marathon Plus tire for my rear wheel (I had already bought a Continental Gatorskin which will go on my front wheel). And…
…a few hours later, much frustration, and 3 broken tire levers (even my BikeArlington one!), I will let everyone know how it is once I put it on Wednesday evening after I stop at the bike shop to get a bead jack tire lever so that it’s actually possible to put the tire on the wheel. I tried watching a few how-to videos (including some that don’t use tire levers at all, it’s witchcraft, I tell ya), but I was unable to work the last part of the bead over the edge of the rim.
Oh, the flat count is now at 15 (3 front, 12 rear), as this morning I discovered a slow leak in the rear wheel that flatted it overnight.
The most frustrating thing is that I’ve gotten flats on roads, bike lanes, and trails alike, and back home in the DC area, I did ever-so-slightly less biking and managed to only have a handful of flats per year. The saga continues, but I’ll try to be more assertive in calling for pothole repairs and street-sweeping (I’ve reported one instance of a particularly bad road section).
In the meantime, I used my new camera to take some macro shots of each of the tires on my chinook bike that will be replaced tomorrow. I put the interesting parts of the images together into a collage to show the aftermath of 4 months of biking in the Seattle area. Check out my tires’ battlescars!

Also, I encourage everyone to hit the link and submit a thank you for this getting funded. The WB&A corridor runs to the Marvin Gaye Trail in DC which almost connects to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. Filling one gap in the trail makes it easier to advocate to fill the other ones.

The long term plan is to extend the WB&A to BWI (where it’ll connect with the B&A trail) and a new trail from BWI into Baltimore. I believe there are plans to complete the connection to the ART as well. This bridge was a major hurdle and a great excuse to delay those connections. Judd is absolutely correct – this is one giant step towards an amazing connection between Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis!

Don’t worry; it’s a short hill. Only 0.2 miles according to Google, or 0.1 miles for the actual Strava segment.
Estimating arrival times for these rides is always a crapshoot, but I’m guessing we’ll be at the start of the CCT around 9:35-9:45, and at Quartermaine around 10:10-10:20. If you’d like, PM me your cell phone number and I’ll text you with an update along the way.
One thing I’ve started doing for group rides where we’re meeting people along the route is posting the URL for my beacon (Strava premium) to a public link like the forums or Facebook event. That way, people can just click the link and it’ll show them your exact location. It only requires one person to do so, so if you don’t have premium you can ask someone else to post the link.
I’ll state a caveat, it’s probably best to confirm with the riders if they are comfortable with their location being broadcasted (by association). It shouldn’t be such a big deal since they’ll post their rides to Strava anyway, but after the fact is different from current.

I need help. Addicted.
This has been fun these past days, but how many times can you check the leaderboard without it getting undignified.
And does anyone realize how easy it is to get the word ‘penguins’ into just about any conversation, and then start to explain to the unwitting victim what a primal penguin is.
E.g. today…
Someone said “well that’s a feather in her cap” she will want.
Me: Yes, especially if its a primal penguin feather.
Victim: What?
Me: Oh let me explain. You see there’s this thing called freezing saddles.
Victim: I have to go to lunch.
It sounds like you need to take some time away. The only hope for addiction is going cold turkey. It’s really not healthy being that addicted to freezingsaddles.com. It leads to nothing good. Get away, go some place warm, find a beach. Leave your bike behind, it’ll only trigger the addiction.

THAT is definitely doable! I don’t think it’s something we should add-on for the ride, especially since we’re on roads, but could swap it in for something. Hellbender is a little awkward to get to with some wicked climbs coming off the NE branch, so could drop that and add on Public Option at the end!
I also like that their culture on paying a decent wage and donating tips to local non profits
