Thank you god that it was returned. I was dropped near Clark Crossing Park.

    Heh, I think CCrew was making a crypto-joke there. Well, semi-joke… :)

Put it near Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse for the obvious reasons plus it will make the other local businesses more accessible from CaBi stations in north arlington. Ok, really…I also want it near Papillon Cycles to send them some more business. :)

I don’t know about this year, but there were police auxiliary bike officers in 2008 and 2009, not in 2010.

Concur: rode the DCPL Tour in 2010, don’t remember any police escorts at all.

Thanks, I’ll check out those options next time I ride the loop on my hybrid or road bike!

Hello. I will be visiting the DC/Arlington area in May and was mapping out a few bike rides. My hotel is in Arlington near GW University and I was mapping a ride to DC via the Arlington Cemetery.

Can anyone tell me if the gates to the cemetery at either the McNair Road/Farragut Drive OR Grant/Hobson Drive intersections are open for cyclists to ride through? When viewing the satalite of these intersections on Google maps, it looks like there might be gates here?

I’m trying to find the most direct route to the Tombs of the Unknowns from the west side of the cemetery (McNair Road) and then continue through the cemetery to the east and into DC.

I can’t answer directly, but I’m sure if you call them and specify that you are visiting a gravesite/tomb, they can let you know the rules and routes. My understanding from past experience is that they do not like cyclists touring or commuting through, but I was advised by the staff there a few years ago that I was allowed to pedal the bike to the roadside adjacent to my grandfather’s grave site if I was visiting.

    Hi,
I have a son who’ll be 9 next month and loves to bike. Is there a group/team of similar aged kids he can bike with? With 2 younger siblings it’s hard for us to bike as a family. If you know of an organized bike activity where he can meet others that shares his interest in biking, he’d love it.

My brother Patrick is heavily involved in Trails for Youth ( http://www.trailsforyouth.org/wordpress/ ) which is located in the DC area.

I second Clarendon Blvd eastbound, from Highland all the way thru Lynn…

+ high concentration of driveways and parking lot curb cuts (esp. Starbucks b/t Edgewood and Danville) result in too many right-hook encounters…

The Clarendon Blvd. Starbucks/Whole Foods Interchange is a nightmare no matter what type of traffic you are (foot, bike or car). Talk about Mixing Bowl! Maybe a bypass could be put in? :) More seriously…I do whatever I can to avoid being there whenever possible…which can be difficult since I live on Wilson one block north of there.

Also suggest Lynn St. (NB) on the signpost on the NE corner of the 66 onramp. Most cyclists coming from Rosslyn and heading toward Key Bridge or MVT will not be getting on the bridge sidewalk at that intersection, but continue in the lane until they can mount the curb on the far side of the 66 offramp. Given that the bike lane quits back before the onramp, it would be a nice reminder for motorists that bikes belong in this busy intersection.

Speaking of Lynn St. (NB), and perhaps off-topic: about half the cyclists I know have crashed their bike on the grates making that left turn from Wilson Blvd. usually in the rain. Has Arlington thought about making that turn safer for cyclists?

Clarendon – the part of Fairfax drive that goes right by the coffee shop. Thats one of the only ways to get through this area without getting mowed down on Wilson or Washington. Could you make the right turn onto Fairfax there headed west bound bike only??

Perhaps another off-topic issue: on my return trips from the Bluemont/Ballston area, I usually take a left at 10th Street from Fairfax Blvd. (eastbound) onto…huh…Fairfax Blvd. eastbound: http://goo.gl/maps/rJWP

Anyway, that intersection is also somewhat of a nightmare for cyclists, as it can be very hard to make that “left” to continue on Fairfax legally. Most cars navigate half to 2/3 of the way into the intersection to wait out west/north-bound traffic on 10th St. crossing their path, but that’s super risky for a bike. I suppose the alternate is to take continue forward (aka a “right” onto 10th St. N going east) and take a left on Wilson Blvd. and then a left across traffic if you’re stopping for some Northside coffee…

She was wearing a helmet, which leads me to believe she’s more likely a local (due to the non-rentals of helmets). I assume she decided she wanted to go up to see Great Falls, so perhaps 4 or 5 hours including visit time. I hope she understood the pricing structure…

Anyway, aside from the cost, that does sort of kick ass. :)

Thanks, all. CR – I used to connect through Meetup for some MTB rides, but that sort of fell apart last year. Brendan – the Conte’s ride attracts a serious A group, and a very broadly defined B group. Good times for all. I’ll try to connect with a Rev Cycles ride this year.

Also, for anyone interested, my article is up.

    Thanks Mark!

And I can’t believe I blanked on a few other less-regularly-scheduled DC-area options which aren’t too far for Arlington folks who don’t mind braving the Rosslyn hill from time to time (or can metro their bike during non-peak hours):

    1. The facebook group Chain Gang DC ( https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=71926827296 ) tends to do a loop ride every other week or so, eight months out of the year. Mostly social rides (10-20 miles), with some longer weekend ones (40 or so). They introduced me to my first century, the seagull century, in 2009. Full disclosure: I’m now an admin, which means I’ll be stressing out about ride scheduling this year. :)

    2. WABA ( http://www.waba.org ) puts together events from time to time, more on a yearly schedule: 50 states ride, VASA ride, Lincoln ride, etc.

    3. The Bike House in DC ( http://thebikehouse.org/ and https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Bike-House/104312173340 ) does a few ad hoc ones from time to time. This years “Coldest Day” ride was a hoot: http://thebrightwoodian.blogspot.com/2011/01/bike-house-folks-brave-coldest-day-of.html

    4. Some friends organize a monthly Mt. Pleasant Cruiser Ride ( http://mtpleasantcruiserride.blogspot.com/ ) which is usually a short tour of parts of NW with some really chill folks.

For all rides, assume helmets are required and if they might run into the night, headlight and a rear-flashing red light.

I also will regularly yell at cyclists passing between two trail users. It’s an MUP not the spring classics. Just chill and wait for an opening.

Yeah, that one really irks me. It seems esp. prevalent on the MVT (probably due to traffic volume during the busy seasons)…which is just crazy. I wonder if CCT gets as bad?

I’m thinking of putting a sign on the back of the dummy that says “I brake for trail traffic” for self-preservation.

For Arlington: I’ve been on the Revolution Clarendon Hill Rides quite a few times (last year). When the sun is out late (in mid-summer, I guess), those are some tough workouts. Contes does a similar ride, I think.
For DC: sounds like Bicyclespace is filling up its calendar already, but I haven’t been on their rides yet.

I’ve actually been surprised at the number of joggers/walkers with headphones in who actually gesture the “pass signal received” gesture. A minority of them, to be sure, but I guess some folks don’t leave it on 11 like I do…

How many folks have a bell?

Incredibell here. Depending on trail, speed and what kind of traffic I am passing I alternate from a ding or ding-ding early, then verbally announce to just verbally announcing. In addition, under some circumstances I don’t feel it is safe to take my hands off or away from the steering or brakes, so I just verbally announce.

Had a hipster PBR rrrrrrrrrrrring bell for a while, but a branch pulled it off when parking with the BD on the top rack of the car a few short weeks after installing that bell.
