ParticipantAs long as the user (that means you) really has a good internet connection, HTTP 500 and 503 errors generally mean some type of web service error is happening. I’ve had those types of errors when database backends go down, for example. Sometimes fixing the issue is as simple as the website administrator restarting the database server. In other words, the website administrator for this forum needs to check into the problem. It’s not you, as the user.

Here is some pasted content taken from a LibreOffice Writer document. I’m using Google Chrome version 52.x on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.11.6 which is kept up-to-date with respect to application software and the operating system.few minutes
The above is the paste. Let’s see what happens…the content posted okay without the “service unavailable” message. I have since updated to Chrome version 53.x.

ParticipantPhoto of me taken by a friendly ride marshal at Pit Stop #1. I didn’t catch his name. Thanks!

Yep, it looks like most of the riders on my Strava feed cut the ride short. Nice ride in with Bob Cochran, he rolls at a good pace but it might have been a better idea to Metro in. Sorry Bob for talking you into the extra miles. I figure he got over 50 miles in. Good job Bob!
Hi Rod, I wanted very much to ride in with you — how else would I learn the District without an experienced leader like you? It made a truly good impression on me when I noticed you were talking to some of the people we encountered on our way in. Evidently you were giving them some quick help on-the-go. And for yesterday I did ride just under a metric century, 61.9 miles in all. I just need more training. I need to train in adverse weather conditions too.
On a side note — I am incredibly impressed with the number of streets in the District that have bike lanes. They generally seemed to be unblocked, too. It makes a lot of the Maryland localities look backwards. The presence of bike lanes convinces me that it is worth donating to WABA — surely all the members have a lot to do with obtaining better bicycling support in the area, through the power of membership and donations.

Slowtriguy set the pace for me and did the route finding for the tough last five miles as lack of sleep over the previous couple nights was catching up to me. It was the first time we met. Also got to ride with leprostystudygroup up the MLK climb, another forum member I hadn’t met before. Also rode short segments with other friends, among them Sarah B, surprise visitor Boomer2U. Flybys with several others forum members who I unfortunately didn’t recognize.
I think there was someone in a distinctive red-yellow-black jersey trying to talk to me. I think I surprised the poor guy with an unexpected hard stop. Then he went on to talk to you, Rod.

Hard ride and fun! Thanks WABA, ride volunteers, marshals, especially the one who towed me around Hanes Point and tried to drop everyone he encountered.
I too want to thank all the WABA volunteers and marshals. They really went to a lot of hard work. There was a deaf WABA volunteer at Pit Stop #2, but I didn’t catch her name. I thought she was a sign language interpreter until she corrected me. I think she told me her husband was riding in the event, but I’m not sure.
I also want to thank the ride marshal who took a photo of me at pit stop #1. He was really friendly and nice. Also there were two other marshals who seemed to ask me if I was okay. Whoever you folks are: thank you!

ParticipantKLizotte,
Thank you! It was a very challenging ride. I’ll follow the advice in your avatar: Keep Calm and Bike On.

ParticipantRelated to this, which shops in the DC-MD-VA area have a lot of experience with generator hubs? Or individuals who have built the generator hub wheels since it really comes down to the skill of the wheel builder.

ParticipantI too want to have a generator hub. I’ve read through the Peter White website earlier this year. I think I’m open to the Schmidt hubs and lights.

ParticipantI wasn’t able to complete the ride yesterday. I think the main problem for me was lack of training. My short daily bicycle commutes and 3-4 mile trips to the grocery store were not enough; I need to complete longer rides. Also my pre-ride nutrition in the days before the ride wasn’t real great. Then I lost my cue sheets somewhere after pit stop #2. I tried tagging along with several groups but all those riders were much fitter, especially on hills, and I lost them. I noticed at least 3 folks had flats. I will train more. There is always next year.

ParticipantI’d like to thank Rod Smith for meeting me in Greenbelt yesterday and leading me to Walter Pierce Park. I didn’t realize that Rod had bicycled several miles from his home to meet me, then bring me into DC, and then do the 50 States ride. Thanks, Rod!

ParticipantInteresting cartoon! It makes me wonder if the blacksmiths of colonial times had the technical skill and tools to build bicycle frames. I realize that a bellows and a coal fire is a long, long way from a welding rig…but I still wonder…

Great! Do you think leaving at six will give us plenty of time to sign in and be ready to roll at eight? I think so. Theres a little park there in front of New Deal Cafe, if I recall. PM your phone number in case we have trouble finding each other or running late.
Hi Rod!
PM sent…I think! Let me know if there is a problem and I’ll resend.
Thanks again!

Nah bro, we’re riding to the ride together. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16426414
Thank you so much, Rod! The map is beautiful! And okay, lets do it and ride there together. Just let me be fair and tell you I’m deaf — I can’t hear. I can speak just fine. That was my secret from the whole forum!
Let me know when we should meet.

I can meet you in Greenbelt and show you the way if you like. If not, I can map it out for you and post a link. The Proteus standard “shop ride to DC” route.
Hi Rod!The rest of this week will be pretty busy for me, and I’m not sure I’ll have the time to ride with you. Or even do a “test ride” to that location. If you can map out the route and post a link for me, I’d be extremely grateful. I’m not sure if Proteus has something similar already posted on their website as well. I only pay attention to their online calendar.
Also — to be fair — I’m not sure if I’ll chicken out and either take Metro or ask a friend to drop me off there. So don’t feel you have to map a ride out for me. I definitely will be on this ride, I’m just not quite sure now if I’ll really bicycle there.
The Proteus “shop ride to DC” is one of the rides I might not have not been on. I sometimes do their Coffee Rides on Sundays and once I did a Saturday shop ride which I think did go into DC, and on the return we stopped at a bakery in Hyattsville for coffee and snacks. But I’m not sure if that was the “shop ride to DC”.
Thanks a ton

ParticipantThank you! Yes, I know the great people at Proteus. I’ll ask their advice.
