ParticipantCaught up with a shirtless FTC employee on the mall portion of my commute. Very nice guy on a frankenstein green bike – maybe I’ll see him another day.

ParticipantI used to take first street on the west side of union station north to the NoMA (I call it Dodge City after the Strava segment), but it’s now completely impassable. So I go around Columbus Circle to the East side of Union and up that street until it dead ends, take a left, and then go under the Harris Teeter parking garage to get to work: http://app.strava.com/activities/75857444
OR you can go up capitol hill to get on the same street: http://app.strava.com/activities/80473386
OR you can take K street across to get to the NoMA: http://app.strava.com/activities/76177301Good luck!

Me: descending the east side of Courthouse Hill on 14th Street, heading to the 4-way stop and right turn onto Rhodes. Car in front, parked cars on right, about to take my turn in the 4-way stop rotation.
You: mountain bike with paniers, fenders, flippers, mirrors and every other safety add-on but not the wisdom to wait behind me. You overtook on the wrong side, took the line that I was about to use and blew through the stop sign. My controlled descent became an emergency skid that I barely managed.
Wait your turn.
Belongs in the SHOAL report haha

ParticipantHey – great idea!
But it’s also fun to see the ELITE folks and how I match up agains them (poorly).
Any explanation as to why this is happening? I just wanted to check on here before I email Strava…

I understand the frustration with shoalers who are slow after the light changes, but what about when I know I’m going to pass them soon anyway? For example, I’ve been rapidly gaining on someone before the light turns red. It seems that passing when stopped at a light is the safest place to do it.
I would WAIT until it’s safe to pass AFTER the intersection.

ParticipantI ELITE myself and yell at them more often than I should.
I did it by accident this morning in the NoMA (confused driver at a 4-way stop), but apologized and slowed before passing again.
People who shoal will only stop shoaling if you make them remember that time that they shoaled that guy and were embarrassed enough to pedal sadly, but pedaled on – to NOT shoal another day.
With cars, I just hit their hood or side view mirror or whatever I can reach out and flick without falling over haha.

ParticipantSo I took the eastern sidepath and made it in 1:16 behind a guy with a bikearlington jersey: http://app.strava.com/activities/74865097#1486609502
6 seconds difference isn’t too bad – AND I got to look over and see the sun rising over the city. I might just have to stick with the sidepath.
birddog
ParticipantLooks like you’re using the eastern sidepath. Maybe my ride tomorrow will show me on that segment…
birddog
ParticipantSo you take the western sidewalk each way? I knew it was faster because of the lighter pedestrian traffic…but not sure about the legality of taking the car lanes.
I’ll try the western lanes too.
birddog
ParticipantCar traffic lanes: http://app.strava.com/activities/74606883#1480518676. 0.4 miles in 01:10.
I’ll try the pedestrian lanes tomorrow.
birddog
ParticipantSorry – I should have said between stopped cars. They inch forward on my sides as I glide in between them. With no other cars on the road, I try to occupy the right lane.
