ParticipantThere are 4 statues in front of Casa Italiana commemorating some notable Italians. Here is the one of Giuseppe Verdi, considered the greatest of all the Italian opera composers.

ParticipantThis magnificent LFL is at 1841 Vernon St in Adams Morgan. It’s supposed to have some inspirational art and design books but I saw mostly fiction, the occasional children’s book, and a book titled “Squirrels seeks Chipmunks” that was appropriate for today’s scavenger hunt.

ParticipantHoly Rosary Church. Although this area never had a substantial no of Italian immigrants there used to some that lived around Swampoodle and Judiciary Square including artisans that worked on the Capitol and other buildings. Unfortunately most of them left and many of the buildings were demolished when building I-395 and Union Station but the church still remains and continues to give sermons in Italian. There is also a cultural institute next door that teaches Italian language and cooking, teaching la dolce vita.

ParticipantBen’s Chili Bowl, a landmark on U St. Ben Ali, the namesake of the restaurant, is actually a Trinidadian of Indian descent who studied dentistry at Howard University. Enclosed is an NPR article about how he drew from both his Black and Asian heritage and wanted to bring some spice to America. A celebration of both his heritage!

ParticipantThe Dumbarton House’s LFL is at the corner of 27th and Q St, at the entrance of a little park. It sems to contain novels and would be a great place to read a book during the daytime.

Participant1/11 – LFL at 2119 N St NW in West End. One side contains an art work of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, and the other Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge. Was so distracted with the art work that I forgot to look inside!
