Thinking of Pete Beers this morning. Honoring him w/Cafe Kindred…the normal stop after his 6am hill rides. Get all kinds of coffees & espresso with great dishes to fuel you home after a morning ride.

ParticipantNew wormhole for me tonight. From W&OD west of Vienna to Meadow Knoll Ct (Google Map)
A raised wooden walkway….rather long.
I’ll call it “Riding over a” Meadow Knoll.A little grass then someone’s driveway at the end and you pop out on Meadow Knoll and can get out to Lawyers Rd (not that you normally want to….hence I’ve never done this until tonight).
A view from the plank

ParticipantCat5: The over the top yard with way too many scenes to capture in one photo. Also in 10000 block of Lawyers Rd in Vienna.
A collage of photos. Let me know if you want to see more.

ParticipantI did ride over the newly opened Cedar Ln bridge, but no photo.
Instead, a boring infrastructure sighting of the Capital Bikeshare station at Lee Hwy & Woodstock in Arlington.

Participant1/5/21 – “Bird”
This one was fun. I had “Birds” on my mind this morning, and wasn’t sure where/what I would find in the dark. I found birds of all kind though (see in my Strava pics).
Just posting one here….a creative interpretation of a “bird” sighting in Crystal City.

I knew that a ride along Four Mile Run and the MVT would yield lots of opportunities for bird photos. Indeed it did – I wish I could show you all of them, but y’know, contest rule 9. Anyway, this photo from the Gravely Point parking lot is my favorite. I think this guy has a trip to the car wash in his future.

Photo of the day for sure!

ParticipantCat5: Still some Xmas lights out there. Sure, there are better, but this is what I happened to find on my ride this morning. TBD if I ever get time to ride to “the good stuff” before the holiday lights come down.

1/5/2021 — bird. Here’s my bike at Sena’s Totem, a chainsaw sculpture by Andrew Mallon in Oak Grove Park in Arlington. There’s an owl at the top. There’s another bird perched on the windowsill on the other side, but I’m not including a photo of that side because of drevil’s hardarsedness.

Many thanks to Bike Arlington for putting together a tour of five of Andrew’s chainsaw sculptures, which inspired me to go check them out!
Thanks for the insight to the chainsaw art….definitely on my to-do list!

ParticipantThe new protected bike lanes (in 2020) coming into Crystal City on Potomac Ave.
That and the silky smooth new pavement make this a nice bike route. Just watch out for broken glass, which I’ve seen a couple times last few months. Plus joggers who like the lane

ParticipantLikely a well known wormhole, Taney Ave has a nice sidewalk to let you stay parallel to Duke St and avoid traffic.
Surely someone has a more creative name too, but I’ll call it the Taney Ave Sidewalk wormhole to keep it simple.
Here it is on the Google mapbigredboiler
ParticipantI would like to sponsor a new pointless prize for 2021. #Mailbox
How to Play
If you’re riding along and you see a very unique mailbox:
1. take a photo of it (with or without your bike in the pic)
2. include it in your Strava post with the #Mailbox hashtag
3. post it to the Mailbox Collection Pointless Prize Thread in the Forum as well (this is where I’ll officially track/count entries)
4. you can also post to a Google album, “FS2021 Mailbox Collection” I created to make it easy for everyone to see all the entries at once. [Photos sort new to old]
5. include where you found the mailbox
— if your Strava settings include sharing photo location on your route map, that’s fine
— otherwise include text in your forum posting with an address or roughly where on a street
— if your photo has location tagging enabled, the location will show up in the Google photo album under photo infoFor examples to get you thinking, check the Google album “FS2021 Mailbox Collection” I started.
- There are several from around the DMV (some from far away)
- All would count except the one of the plain mailbox just lying on the ground (I assume it was the victim of mailbox baseball; I found it funny at the time to be lying there all alone)
- The rainbow painted one is highly questionable, but I was feeling nice when I snapped the photo, and I’ll give it to you if you find; consider it a gift
Winners (Prize details to come…expect them to be mail and/or Easter egg related):
1. One subjective winner for most original / unique / creative (totally subjective and judged by a panel of me)
2. One for most mailboxes that qualify (Again, the jury of me makes the decision of whether mailbox meets the high hurdle of creative/unique enough to count)Why?????
- There are some unique mailboxes out there
- It’s like an Easter Egg hunt (you never know where you’ll find one)
- I want to know where some cool mailboxes are (that I haven’t already found
)
More details:
- You can include multiple mailboxes per ride
- If you find one that I’ve already shared in the Google album, I’ll count it for prize #2 (most mailboxes), but don’t hold high expectations for winning prize #1 (creative)
- Don’t think a wrap over a mailbox will count (you can try, but 99% sure I’ll toss it)…it better be one funny/interesting/crazy wrap
- My tastes tend to be biased toward intricacy and humor (but you never know what might strike my fancy and take the win)
- For the creative prize, the winner will the first person to post/share the mailbox if multiple people post it
Good luck, keep your eyes peeled, and have fun!!! -Kris

ParticipantFalls Church City bike racks in the shape of bikes.
Not sure how practical they are, but they look nice and can be found throughout the town.
