I found some more mailboxes in the past couple days…all around the DMV, so keep your eyes peeled (or even try to find these!).

I added them to the Google Album and posting here too.

Happy Hunting!

New wormhole for me today. #Research Wormhole

Just needed to do some “Research” to find it.
Near Rockville; a little sidewalk connecting Dundee Rd to some condos that can take you across MD28 to Research Blvd.

1/9/21 – Balloons!

Took me 20min into my ride to find my first balloons.
Found a good variety today; liked the couple wind spinners in hot-air balloon shape, but the photo for posting is this nice mural in Rockville town center.

A twofer day with Public Art and Picture of the day. I had an impossible time finding the mural. I had an address but that was not the mural site address. Without the keen eyesight of KBikeVA, I would still be stuck in OneLoudoun. (now to continue my story) a hard time tying the strings to the bike, but I was fortunate not to have the bike float up to the sky!!

Awesome pic! Where is the mural?

1/8/21 – Bells!

So many bells of all sorts on today’s rides. Fun stuff.
More than a dozen in Strava, and for this post I’m going w/my double bell sighting…..doorbell + jingle bells together

This bell is outside the firehouse at the corner of Wilson Blvd & George Mason Dr. – right beside the Bluemont Junction Trail.

Everyone loves a good lizard story, right? Every year on July 4th there’s a ceremony wherein they ring this bell. Back about ten years ago, when we had just gotten our pet lizard Cooper, we decided to attend the ceremony and bring him with us. Our previous lizards had been bearded dragons, which are very mellow and tend to sit still. We weren’t used to uromastyx, which are much squirmier and also like to hide in any cave-like area they can find. On the drive over, Cooper squirmed out of my wife’s hands and crawled deep under the passenger seat, where the was no way we could reach him, and there was nothing we could do to entice or prod him to come out. I actually wound up unbolting the seat and picking it up so that we could extract the darn lizard.

1/7/21 – Moon

Another fun day of hunting. I had so many moons on my mind (but only found a few types).
Found moon in the dark (looked really nice in the clear sky, but photo sucked). Moon in morning twilight, and even two half-moon (windows) to equal a moon.

My favorite creative one was this though….the moon in Monroe Ave in Alexandria.

Oberon and Ariel are moons of Uranus and streets in McLean, VA.
Another moon of Uranus, Titania, is a block away.

I rode through the neighborhood myself today, and was only thinking of Shakespeare characters, so totally missed all these…..doh! But I was hoping to find a streetsign “moon” today.

Today I rode what I’ll call the Falstaff Slow Roll Wormhole for the first time.
It’s a sidewalk & on Google Maps (link)

Usually I ride north on Lewinsville, but this avoids the hill and takes you to Falstaff (a nice neighborhood road too and puts you closer to Spring Hill back on Lewinsville).
It was a rooty, narrow sidewalk and curvy, so not so quick….definitely a long-cut and not a short-cut.

Looks like you can find a bike shaped rack in Vienna as well (like they are all over Falls Church).
Not sure who copied whom :)

Temporary (for a long time) wormhole on Chain Bridge Rd near Tyson’s. I call it the Construction Wormhole.
On the map, it looks like a road, but it’s closed off by concrete barricades and typically a parking lot for construction workers.
A great way to enter/exit Tyson’s (and now ride to Wegman’s :).
Link to location on Google Map
And a photo from this morning. Always looks like a traffic jam there :)

District Taco has grown from its food truck origins into a chain of a dozen or so physical locations, but I still consider it a small local business. Yes, I like it, and the reason is in its name – tacos!

And it’s owned by a local cyclist! What’s not to love?

Tyson’s is generally a place to avoid on a bike, but there are a few routes that can be good and useful. Covid has definitely made Tyson’s more welcoming, but it won’t last forever.
The bridge over Leesburg Pike on Kidwell Dr has a nice bike lane that is distanced from the main driving lane and it’s not a busy stretch.
Makes a good way to connect Gallows to Jones Branch & Westpark (two roads relatively good for cycling around Tyson’s).
