These devices need to be standard equipment in all motor vehicles, always switched on when the transmission is engaged, and full functionality confirmed as part of vehicle inspection. Anyone wishing to use a cellphone while automobile-ensconced would need to pull well off the roadway, and put the vehicle in park or neutral.

I ride with a mirror and find I spend very little time actually looking into it, especially in traffic. I only use it when I want to know what’s going on behind me.

ELITE cyclists, however, assume I’m always staring into my mirror so they have no need to call their passes, apparently.

These reports are helpful. Just to make sure I understand – you could see the white part (the circle and line) but not the red part (the right turn arrow), right?

Your description of the sign does not sound right. I saw a red circle with a line (universal “NO” symbol) light up. Nothing else was discernible.

Sorry, no pictures. No time to stop yesterday.

Yesterday, heading west through the IoD into the gale and bright late-afternoon sun at about 5:20, I looked up to observe the operation of the of the lighted no turn on red sign. At the height of afternoon rush hour, it was unreadable and all you could see when the red “NO” symbol came on was the red “NO” symbol, begging the question “No what?”.

Is it more visible in the morning when the morning sun is shining on it? Or can it only be seen in the dark of night or on extremely cloudy days?

YOU: A highly visible jogger (white long-sleeved shirt, bright blue blinky belt) going east on the Custis approaching the bottom of the valley between the Two Sisters.

ME: Well-lit, momentum loving cyclist behind you at the top of the first Sister about to call my pass.

YOU: Pulling a no-look Crazy Ivan at the bottom.

ME: Yelling a panic pass and grabbing two handfuls of brake lever.

YOU: Leaping off the trail and saying something unintelligible as I passed, which I assume to be a confession of your sin.

ADVICE TO YOU: Keep up the good work on wardrobe selection. But look back before you turn around, it alerts us all to potential danger.

NOTE TO SELF: When descending the Two Sisters, call passes on first sight of joggers/peds.
