Rick, you couldn’t pay me enough to set foot inside Clarendon Ballroom (it is all that is unholy about Clarendon these days), but I’ll otherwise be around before 6. :) Drop me an email.

Never been to the Ballroom, that’s why I wanted to take this chance to try it out. But maybe the hottest day of the year isn’t the best day anyway.

    Will be there.

Anyone going to be in that neighborhood earlier? I could get there by 5, and I want to check out the Clarendon Ballroom rooftop before going over to Jay’s. Let me know if you want to connect.

Be sure to cross Memorial Bridge on the south side. Then turn left, cross the GW Parkway (carefully) and you’ll hit the Mt. V.

I’m sure I announce my passes way more than the average user, but I won’t if 1) the trail is plenty wide, and I’ll be passing completely on the left side of the trail, 2) the person is wearing earbuds, 3) it’s a Mom/Dad with a wobbly kid on a bike. 99% of the time, the poor kid will be startled, look back, and just swerve right into the lane in front of me. I just coast on by with my hands on the brakes ready to ditch if I have to.

Basically I’m not an “always” person. I’ll do it when it makes sense, and when it is actually helpful.

Agree with this. I don’t expect EVERY pass to be called. But damn, I’ve had some close calls.

I think the answer is similar to the answer to the question, why don’t drivers use turn signals?

Yes! Glad you connected the two. I have noticed in recent years that lots of drivers don’ t use turn signals and lots of cyclists don’t warn when passing. Both annoy the hell out of me, at least when such warnings would have been useful to me.

I believe the purpose was to slow cars down around the crosswalk.

Okay, well, it’s working to slow cyclists who cut through that side of the parking lot too.

I’ve had an ongoing e-mail volley with Dottie Marshal, Park Superintendent. She’s been awesome!!! She e-mailed me this morning and said that she’d been out to observe how traffic flows over the speed bump. She agreed that it needs to be moved to the south of that crosswalk area. That was originally where it was supposed to be installed. They’re going to have the contractor move the speed bump as soon as they can.

South? That doesn’t make sense. I thought it was keeping cyclists from rushing onto the trail at the crosswalk when coming from the north and sideswiping those who take the trail the whole way. At least, it’s accomplishing that now by slowing and/or discouraging bikes in that part of the parking lot.

Like GreyBear said, the bottom line (so to speak) is that you can only know what seat is best by trying it. And it may or may not be a woman-specific design.

I am definitely a pan guy. Can’t stand the sweat and weight of a backpack. A pan feels lighter. I notice absolutely no balance problems with having just one.

As for looking cool, I’m too old to give a damn any more. Walking around with a baby carrier put that to rest once and for all.

It’s a little-known fact, but Power Bars are actually 83 percent bug guts. So it’s about the same.

He was right – the uphill rule is a corollary of the general rule that self-absorbed arrogant jerks always have the right-of-way.

I wanted to avoid looking like looking like a d-bag wearing all of those fancy clothes, but after getting some unpleasant chafing I caved and got some padded Lycra shorts. Well worth it. They also make padded Lycra underwear which you can use under street clothes.

I also find those biker shirts with the back pockets very handy for carrying stuff like your phone and wallet. Fortunately I found one in white without all that goofy advertising crap that people wear.

    +1 on both of these.
