Seconding what KLizotte suggested, I’d love to see a Bikestation type business there like the one at Union Station, with or without repair service. That one offers a monthly or annual (?) membership rate, but also allows ad hoc hourly or day use. It also has a dressing room for changing clothes, which has come in handy.

Steve, we’re really going to miss you, but it sounds like you have great things to look forward to. Thanks for all your many great contributions to the forum, including that nice note, and for organizing some fun winter social rides for us. Please post occasionally and fill us in on how you’re doing and what biking is like up there.
Wishing you the very best! – Kathy

Fogging of cycling glasses – a lot of new cold weather riders get perplexed by this issue and, like I once did, wonder if there are products to prevent it. Glasses generally do not fog up while you’re underway, but then will when you come to a stop.

The solution is incredibly easy and does not require buying anything. When your glasses fog up, just push them down your nose about an inch and leave them there until a couple of seconds after you are underway and moving and they will be clear again. It’s that simple.

Capital bikeshare bikes have nice wide tires. ;) Also, multi-modal transport.

I used bikeshare bikes a lot after last winter’s multiple snows, and several times would use bus, metro and bikeshare to come into town, then bikeshare to get all or part of the way home, depending on conditions. (This also eliminated the need for constant chain and drive train cleaning for my own bike. Hiking boots and bikeshare ‘s flat pedals for the win too.)

Baiskeli, thanks for hosting Biketoberfest. Would you mind posting some info about it under the Events thread as well? I had been looking for it there and couldn’t find anything. Others might be doing the same. Thanks!

Interesting. In my experience the east beg button successfully gets you a walk signal across the Pike.

I’ll try that next time, but I thought it was labeled as being for crossing Four Mile Run Drive so I haven’t even bothered with it for quite awhile. Thanks for letting me know that.

The beg button on the west side of the W&OD and Columbia Pike most definitely isn’t working. And of course none of the people who line up on the east side have the sense or inclination to press the one on that side. Maybe just make the walk signal a normal part of the light cycle???

This brings up another problem. The only beg button on the east side of Columbia Pike that I’m aware of is for crossing Four Mile Run, not for crossing Columbia Pike. So there’s a non-working beg button on the west side of the Pike and nothing at all to help get across from the east side.

I think a lot depends on intended use. I think my LG plastic fantastic jacket is great for 8 to 15 mile commuting, but one of the more expensive ones is probably going to be better for longer or high exertion rides.

I love those $24 well vented Louis Garneau rain jackets for Spring and Fall. If you handle opening the velcro closure gently, they last a long time. I carry mine rolled up in a plastic newspaper bag to protect it in my pannier. They can get a little warm sometimes, but i just dress lighter to compensate. The armpit and side vents, high collar and long back apron are awesome. I have other more expensive rain jackets, but this inexpensive one is my favorite until it gets a lot cooler. I also like that I can just wipe it clean. Performance bikes carries them and had them in stock the last time I was there.

Many thanks to ABAC and BikeArlington for a wonderful evening meet ‘n greet. There was a good turnout from South Arlington as well as other areas, and I think we all enjoyed meeting ABAC members and each other is such a convivial way. It was great to visit with Tim and Erin from BikeArlington too. It was a lovely evening for an outdoor party and nice to be able to have our bikes within eyesight as well. Great food too. Thanks again!

Thanks for the NBC reminders. I just posted all my September miles to date. It would be cool if Oxon Hill would consider joining with us next year.
