ParticipantIf the bush and bearing are worn then no amount of lubrication will solve the problem. Check the play by rocking your cassette. If there is movement, you now know why. It will also be wearing your cassette and chain at a higher rate too.

ParticipantIf its making bad/loud noises its likely that the bush and bearing are shot.
Before you tear it down, grab the big sprocket on your cassette and rock it to check for play. If you see movement your hub probably has the chronic Mavic bush wear. They use a nylon bush as the inner bearing, and once enough road frass finds its way past the inner seal that bush wears down. The best solution is to rebuild it with ceramic bearings using this kit – http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-HUBDOCTOR-PRO-MAVIC-FREEHUB-REBUILD-KIT-HYBRID-CERAMIC-BEARINGS-/330940493909
I did mine early this season and its been silky smooth ever since. Here’s a bit more info – http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?7034-Rebuilding-Mavic-freehub&p=85786#post85786After being stumped by the fact that Mavic’s mineral oil and Perdo’s Road Rage mineral oil are both unobtanium, I went hunting. Turns out LQ5 is a good weatherised and filtered lubricant that works perfectly on the Mavic freewheel hub.

McLean Hardware has it in stock – 4oz bottle for $5.00, but you are welcome to use mine for the few drops it takes to lube the pawls. I’m in McLean.Likewise if you are a bit antsy about rebuilding the hub just grab the kit and bring it over to my place. It takes a bit over an hour to do it, and most of that is cleaning parts.

Edit to add that another big plus of the way that tennis works is that men and women get paid equal prizes for winning/making it to X round of the tournament…
All you need to do is to buy Billie Jean King a road bike. She’ll have the promotion nailed up and equal prize money done in time for next season

ParticipantContinuing the “TdF riders are from a different planet” theme…..
During the individual TT stage coverage yesterday, Christian Vander Velde casually mentioned that Tony Martin was riding a 58 tooth main ring. The closeups showed he was also running a tiny corn cob cassette as well. Got gearing?

Jens Voigt’s post after the stage (via Bicycling Magazine):
“F—k, that was just another s—t day on the Tour! That was a s—t day! Those were s—t roads! That was s—t weather! That was a s—t hard tempo! Those were s—t crosswinds! Those were s—t flats! Those were s—t crashes! That was a s—t finish and that was a s—t parking lot after the finish!
I’m so over the Tour de France! I’m over smiling and signing autographs!About the only funny thing about the day was that moment when we passed through a town called “Condom!” I had to laugh about that, yeh! Geez, maybe I should have seen that before I had six kids, haha!
But other than that there was nothing good about this day. I’m so over the Tour de France!”
So what does he really think?
Pure Jens talk. Love it. Don’t be surprised if the peleton send Jens to the front to enter the Champs de Elysee in first place on Sunday. They did it for Hincappie and other epic hard men when they rode their last TdF.

ParticipantRode for a while Wednesday afternoon with a guy on a mint 1998 Colnaglo. Chrome forks and seat stays, everything gleaming. Told me he’s taken it all over the globe on various trips, including Australia. Superb survivor example.

It would be nice/interesting to have an Australian ex-triathlete (from Tasmania, no less) on the podium at least though.
Yes it would! He was 19th last year, riding a pure support role. Sitting in second on GC is impressive, so the story is starting well. Astana must struggle if they plan to defend the yellow jersey all the way to Paris, no?

ParticipantInteresting to hear Chris Horner on the NBCS coverage after today’s stage. He described how the day went from relatively relaxed and enjoyable to yet more misery when the storm and rain hit. He also talked about the pressure being ON in the peleton when the long flat run pace was reading over 400 watts on his power meter. His bottom line was that everyone is up for the first day of climbing, although several of the bigger guys like Kittel fell out the back. Watch how this sorts out over the few days ahead, he offered. The serious climbing will take its toll. Funny bit was his complaint that its so damn cold that he can’t sweat off the calories and his weight after the recent stages has been higher than at the start of the stage!

ParticipantEpic? Epic enough to cause a recalibration of what these guys can do.
Consider this: Almost constant heavy rain, wind, and low temperatures. A 97 mile stage including 15km of brutal cobbles. Lars Boom rides this in 3:18 for an average speed just a tick under 30mph and the majority of the peleton were close behind. That’s bloody awesome!APKhaos
ParticipantMassive kudos to Jan at Bikekinetic in Falls Church. Once I told him the problem he pointed me to one major cache of assorted parts while he searched another and FOUND two matching take-off studs M10 x 1.25!!!
Great guy, great store, and a major problem solved. Now I can finish both bikes in time for a weekend surprise for a couple of matching house monkeys. Thanks to Bikekinetic!APKhaos
ParticipantThanks Harry. It was starting to look that way so your confirmation seals it. I’ve asked the CL seller if he remembers which LBS removed the brakes originally. Long shot, but…
Not unobtanium, but close!APKhaos
ParticipantEnglish press are reporting that Cavendish has a dislocated shoulder with associated ligament damage. He must be doubtful for the start tomorrow, especially given the brutal stage profile. 12000 feet of climbing in the middle of England!

ParticipantQuintana won the Giro d’Italia in May which was his first outing as team leader of the Movistar crew. His next race is the Vuelta a Espana in August. The team management say they are prepping him for a serious shot at Le Tour next year.
He was remarkable in the Tour last year and looks capable of out climbing the field in any race. Will have to wait for next year to see him in action at the TdF.

ParticipantVicegrip is right. I was looking for a 61cm first road bike. Spotted nice CAAD 9 but the ad was removed. Larger frames like this are harder to find, so I placed a WTB for a CAAD 9 61cm hoping the original advertiser might see it. Had several responses from guys selling similar bikes, including the Scott CR1 Pro with Ultegra everything that I eventually bought for a very nice price. The seller had a new high end bike sitting in his office for a couple of weeks. His wife had told him he couldn’t buy it until he sold one of his current bikes. The s-1 rule had been skirted!
The Scott has been terrific. 2006 model but with a superb carbon frame, good wheels, and definitely more bike than I expected for the money. Good luck with your hunt. Post progress as the search proceeds.
