I was just looking at the GP4000S

I run the GP4000 with the reflective strip in a 25c. Gives a little more cushion for the commute, but is still relatively fast. Reflective strip makes the wife happy. used to run the Specialized All Condition Armadillo. According to the websites, the GP4000 is about 200g lighter per tire. The GP4000S is an extra 15-20g lighter.

Congrats! That must be one heck of a commute! I’m just glad I can average 10/mi/day for the year!

There’s the Congressional Bike Caucus but I don’t know how much advising they do. My first choice would be WABA. Is this question in regards to your other post about getting a bike rack installed?

Probably too far out for most Arlington folks, but there’s a big display at the top of Buckelew near Allan (where the W&OD crosses Shreve Rd)

I’m still surprised when people turn down lights. I offered some to a young couple pushing a stroller in the dark. They had headlamps, but were completely invisible from behind. At least take one red one for your baby! Argh. Count me in for stopping by on monday as long as its relatively dry.

    Not a plow :(
    From an NVRPA Facebook posting:

Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority The W&OD did purchase a small snow blower attachment for an existing tractor. It is not a plow and will not allow our staff to undertake full scale snow removal operations on the trail. This equipment will be deployed after significant snow of great than 6″ to supplement the melting process. We hope by using this equipment the amount of time the trail remains snow and ice covered will be greatly reduced.

Thanks for the reply Bruce. Be sure to let us know here if we can assist in advocacy of any sort! I’d be happy to write to my county supervisor.

As an XC Skier myself, I thought that reason alone for not plowing the trail was crazy. XC skiers only need about a foot and a half for nordic style skiing. You need more room for skate style, but since no one grooms the trails, that’s a moot point. I’d like to think that bikes, peds, and skiers can all coexist in the same chilly temperatures, in the same space of asphalt and snow.

p.s. I was waiting for a ‘plowed’ joke. Thanks Pete!

I just sent an email to FABB asking about trail counters. It’s listed on their goals page, at least to collect trail usage and commuter data.

    Data Collection and Analysis

Research current sources of data on bicycle use in the county. Review sources and publish summary. Identify priority data collection needs. Examples include:

    • Bicycle routes (miles)
    • Trails & paths (miles)
    • Bicycle ownership
    • Bicycle Trips (+ breakdown %)
    • Trip lengths
    • Bicycle commuting data
    • Bicycle accident data (fatalities+injuries)
    • Potential bike ownership + trips
    • Safe routes to schools programs

General demographic and transportation data about the county (over time preferably) would also be useful to set the larger context:

    • Population
    • Households
    • Demographic profile (gender, age profile, etc)
    • Employment & commuting data
    • Car ownership
    • Bus data & passenger data
    • Pedestrian data
    • Car/bus/rail mode share & trips
    • Commuting data
    • Miles of paved road (state and county, different classifications)
    • Air quality data for county/region

Bruce also gave a presentation about cycling crashes and the law at the WABA Regional Bike Summit that occurred on November 3rd.

Crashed! Your Legal Rights In A Bicycle Accident

you can watch the presentation on Ustream at http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/18282863

it starts about the 47 minute mark. there is a bookmark there, but you’ll have to turn up your volume, the audio isn’t the best, and I haven’t seen his slide deck posted up on the WABA page.
