ParticipantThe Strava-Instagram link doesn’t seem to be that accurate. It might be as long as an hour for a photo before/after a ride for a photo to get grabbed by Strava. For example, I rode multiple times on Sunday, but Strava associated a picture I took in the middle of the 3rd ride (and didn’t post until well after ride #3) with ride #2.
There is a simple “reject” process in Strava where you click a photo associated with the ride and in the bottom right corner click “unlink from Strava”

ParticipantQuick update — I was correct about the problem. I took a picture tonight along my ride (I am a sucker for monuments) and posted to instagram right then. When I finished the ride, I saved in Strava as normal and Strava grabbed the photo from Instagram. When FS ingested the Strava activity, it grabbed the picture along with it and it’s now on the FS daily photo feed.
So bottom line for those trying to make this work:
1. Use #BAFS2015 in the Instagram description
2. Associate your instagram with strava (via strava profile>settings>social connections)
3. Post any photos before you save the strava rideAlcova cyclist
ParticipantThanks!
I got Instagram–>strava working (although it doesn’t do a great job of picking the right activity to link to if you’ve done multiple rides in one day)
Now I just have to figure out how to get my handiwork to show up on the freezingsaddles.com home page where it belongs
I think my problem might be caused by posting the picture to instagram after FS has already imported the Strava data. Even if the picture later gets associated with a particular ride, there’s no trigger to sweep in the picture data since FS already has ingested the strava activity. For example, I took a picture on my morning ride, but didn’t post it to instagram right away (and hadn’t linked my strava & instagram accounts at that point anyway). Now that my accounts are linked, I’ll have to take and post a picture on the ride home and see if that manages to find its way to the website.
I don’t know if that’s really something that needs to be “fixed” on the website… but lunkheads like me need to understand how to make it work.
btw, this is the picture I took this morning that I wanted to see on the website:

ParticipantI am in central Arlington. Best chances for me to ride are Saturdays or early Sunday mornings (done by 11:30 or so). I might be able to get away for a lunchtime ride in central DC (I work just south of the national mall on 12th ST SW). Haines Point is quite close.

ParticipantI seem to be doing something wrong. I am putting #BAFS2015 in the instagram description, but pictures aren’t showing up in the Freezing Saddles feed (so I don’t know if they’re showing up in the photo feed for the contest either). I tried posting one yesterday and one this morning.
Or do I need to tag a person as #BAFS2015? (I’ve just been putting that in the description).
What does it mean to “associate a picture with a strava activity”?
Any thoughts?
Is there anyplace to go see all the collected pictures? (other than just searching for BAFS2015 in instagram)

ParticipantHello all! I met several of you at the HH. I’m in central Arlington (Alcova Heights – hence the name). My normal commute is from there to the FCC which is at the DC landing of the 14th St bridge. I ride pretty regularly, but usually not too far – my commute is 11 miles round trip. I seem to be on parallel with Gillian, who’s one point ahead of me at the moment (which made me consider going out for another quick 2 miles ride tonight; sanity prevailed).
I am game for weekend rides of middling length (20-30 miles) though may have my 15-yo son along too (we’ve done the Arlington loop together and a 22-mile out&back). I can’t ride Sunday afternoons, since I assistant-coach my daughters softball team and we practice 12-3.
I like Gillian’s suggestion, but offer “Courtland Milloy’s Frozen Heart” as an alternative. By the way, googling “Blackheart” takes you to a lingerie site and is not recommended when you are on the Navy/Marine Corps Internet. I am open to other team names too and will try to think of some other suggestions. We could also go with something not heart-related.
Go Blackhearts!

ParticipantFor my pointless prize (“stout for the stout”) I would like to award it based on the following criteria (This seems like it should be easy to figure, but I will need help from the data wizards):
1. Take the five days with the lowest total daily mileage from all BAFS participants (This seems to be as good a way as any to determine the worst of the worst riding days & doesn’t require tying into any new data sources)
2. Find the high mileage rider for each day of those five days –> winners!
2.a. If the same 1-2 people win all five days using the first method, I might award a prize or two to the #2 or #3 riders on the worst day or two to spread the wealthSo basically, you win by following rules 5 and 9 when the rest of are sitting by the fire or sleazing out 1.1 mile loops in our neighborhood.
Prizes will be 22-oz bottles of the very limited edition “Solstice Stout” (only 5 gallons of which exist in the whole world).

ParticipantHappy to contribute! (and thanks for setting this up!)

I drove home along my bike commute route. I’m hosed for at least a day or two, probably all week given the temps. Half the roads were never touched. Pounded down snow/ice everywhere that will freeze solid over the next few days. Awesome job Fairfax County.
Going to need to figure out where and when I can get my sleaze rides in.
Arlington is not looking much better. I justified my 1.1 mile sleaze ride today as a recon for tomorrow. With the amount of slush and hard packed icy snow and a night as cold as forecast, there is NO WAY I am getting out on those roads tomorrow. Well, at least not for a commute… maybe for a short leg stretcher of 1 to 1.2 miles just to keep the circulation going.

ParticipantApropos of RCannons comment
be prepared for the idiot dog owner to be more of an idiot
From “The Onion’s” Guide to popular dog breeds:
Pit Bulls
These stocky, powerful dogs are infamous for their highly dangerous owners, who are given to fits of unexpected rage when provoked. Sturdily built and known for their tenacity and ferocity, pit bull owners are prone to violence and should be avoided, especially if they feel threatened.January 2, 2015 at 2:23 pm in reply to: Alert!!! ParticipantAnother boring one…
“Alcova Heights” is a neighborhood in Arlington, where I moved last summer (west of Glebe and between 50 and Columbia Pike).

ParticipantI think I am in – definitely as a contributor, probably as a fundraiser.
Quick question — I see in the thread comments that a few people have pledged “$0.XX per mile” but the crowdrise website only seems to allow you to donate a fixed amount. Am I doing something wrong, or will people just do the math at the end and make a donation then based on mileage as reported at the end of the game?

First year, so not sure… will provide homebrewed beer for one or more prizes
I boiled up the “Solstice Stout” today. It’s in the primary fermentation bucket & I’m anxiously awaiting the first bubbles to tell me my yeast is alive & well and happily changing sugar into alcohol. I’ll be adding some bourbon-soaked wood chips in a week or so.
Just need to come up the pointless prize that goes with it (and finish up the rest of the brewing & bottling process – should be ready just in time for the end of FS).

ParticipantGood morning!
I’m Chris (@Alcova Cyclist) and have been and on-and-off commuter for several years. A recent job change and move made cycling a much better option (on) until I broke my hand in October (off), but now I am back in the saddle (on). Hoping BAFS will change my thought calculus when I am deciding whether to wimp out and take the bus instead this winter.
