So it turns out there is a holiday this weekend. A holiday for a great man who advanced the idea of equality and diversity in this country. So in honor of him, I’m going to lead a ride from Proteus Bikes to the MLK Jr Memorial on Monday. We’ll head down the ART to the memorial, and we could choose to add some Hains Point laps if we want to. I’ll firm up details and post info here.

FYI, The lows are supposed to be in the single digits Sunday night and the highs are only going to be around 30. I’ll look for your details, but if it starts before 11, count me out (unless there is a major forecast change). I don’t mind “freezing” saddles, but I don’t like “frigid” saddles.

But, we have over 100 more miles than 1st and 2nd place teams 19 and 18.

How is this possible you ask?

Days ridden with the 10 point bonus is the answer.

As much as possible, please try and do at least a 1 mile ride a day to get the 10 point bonus.

As I initially said, I care more about participation, than miles ridden.

Hope everyone has a good weekend and is able to do some riding.

Anyone can announce a team event at any time, coffee, beer, ride, etc…

Hey, Bob. I think you confused BAFS18-Team #7 (my team!!!! Yay!!!!) for team 18. And by the way. Our team rocks!! We are going to eat lots of donuts, drink lots of beer, and ride mega-miles! (well, at least decent miles, but most days). I learned from last year that the daily riding team wins out over the mega-mile team.

Looks like there will be some lingering moisture in the air tomorrow, windy and very cold, brrrr……..

Bob. I have standards. I will not eat a Little Debbie or a donut unless I ride at least 50 miles. Otherwise, I’d look like a balloon. I can not say the same for beer. I’m hoping to get out after things dry out.

And I look forward to your “25 mile” ride.

I also do not like this “rcannon100” person who liked your post. They are evil!!

It looks like most teams have all 11 members at this point, and we’re in 2nd place. Yay!!! Keep up the good work. And let’s hope for some dryer weather for us folks who don’t like wet!! It looks like we have a pretty decent group of people who actually do ride their bikes. I think that will help. And just as a reinforcement for the people who met me at Happy Hour. I really don’t give a rats ass, but it would be nice if we were at least respectable. I think we finished in 4th last year, and I was quite happy with that. And last year, we did not have one single group ride, so I would like to try to change that. The whole idea of this is to have some fun and meet some new people while doing something we all like.

The weather this weekend looks marginal at best, so let’s hope for something nicer next weekend and try to get some type of team ride organized.

I’m certainly willing to ride over towards PG Co, as long as you don’t start before 10:00 am and someone gives me directions. As I posted before, I pretty much don’t do anything (especially wake up before 8:30 am). I don’t drink coffee, but I like donuts and beer (and Little Debbie’s!!)

We now have all 11 of us in the Strava Club (Yay!!), so I have made it private. That will keep the riff raff out.

Welcome aboard everyone. We can either post stuff in here (which everyone can see), or we can create a post in our club if it’s something we don’t want everyone to see.

Regarding the team name, I’m easy. I just like to make things simple and not require a lot of extra non biking work. Obviously, I’m happy with our current name (since that means I have to do nothing else). But I’m also open to some of your other suggestions. But, me being the sort of positive type of person, I would prefer a team with a positive feel. Magnificent Seven and Seven wonders (or some other movie titles would be fine), but I’m not a big fan of Seven Deadly Sins.

    Keep on keeping on!

I might have to get out to join you for some of your hills rides, Alan! It’ll be in better weather with less salt on the road so I can take out my light road bike. I’ll still get dropped on the hills though cause I need to lose some weight.

During the summer, I have lead road rides for Proteus up from College Park out to Columbia and Bowie and everywhere in between, so I’m fairly familiar with the roads in this area. There is some fantastic trail riding in the area with the Anacostia Trail System for those looking for a relaxing ride, nice quiet roads with average rolling hills for those who like quick roads, and parks like fairlands for those who like MTB roads.

Oh! And if you like beer, I’m thinking about leading a brewery tour early-mid February, which will include 3 Stars, Right Proper, Atlas Brew works and probably end at Franklin’s in Hyattsville. I’ll post details to this thread when that is finalized.

Additionally, there is a freezing saddles calendar that has all freezing saddles related events posted to. Check it out and feel free to “infiltrate” other teams events!!

Oooh, I like beer, too. We have two nice local breweries very close to where I live. There is Waredaca Brewing (which is also a horse farm) and Brookeville Beer Garden. The links are as follows:

    Waredaca: https://www.waredacabrewing.com/
    Brookeville: http://brookevillebeerfarm.com/

Personally, I like Waredaca better since you get to see horsies, and if you want, you can even sign up for horseback rides while you are there. Both of them have live music on certain days. I guess I could try to put together some type of ride if I feel motivated. We could probably manage a decent ride if we left from the Colesville or Briggs Chaney area.

Great to see everyone at this evening’s festivities.
For the record, it looks like we had 103 people in attendance, plus or minus.
Sorry it took so long for us to get that last batch of food.
On the plus side, Bier Baron returned to us $220, all of which will go toward extra refreshments at the March 21 prize celebration.
So there will be a lot more to eat next time.
Time for bed! Warm regards, w&w

Oh, noo. I hope the ending celebration isn’t on 3/21. In the past it’s usually been in April sometime. I’ll be out of town the end of March, and I’d hate to miss it.

It is done! And if I run into any copyright issues, I will send them your way. Looking forward to my Little Debbie (or Snickers bar).

Oh, and for what it’s worth, I guess I should also do a bit of an intro.

This is only my second year of FS. I was dumb enough to volunteer to be a team captain, so here I am. I guess not many people volunteer.

I’ve always enjoyed riding my bike and being outdoors, but only if the weather cooperates. I don’t mind cold weather, but I don’t do wet. And by cold weather, I mean temps down to the mid 20’s. I may tough it out for an hour or so if it gets colder, but not much more than that. I’ll most likely go for a hike or a walk instead. Or as I did this past cold spell, get out of town!!

I don’t do errands on my bike since I can walk to everything. I have four grocery stores, my Dr. and Dentist, the auto mechanic, the post office, a bunch of places to eat, and the liquor store all within walking distance.

Over the past 25+ years, I’ve been riding an average of about 10k per year. Some years higher, some years less. This was mostly while working full time as a CPA/Tax preparer and not riding much in March, April, Sept. or through Oct. 15 (although I did ride my bike to work on weekends during those months). I sold off a good portion of my clients at the end of 2016 and decided to call it quits and enjoy my life while I can. Hence the insane 20k miles I rode last year.

And one final, important note. Just because I happen to be the captain means nothing. This is our team!! I want you all to participate here on the forum or on our Strava group page for input and ideas of stuff we can do. The odds of you all wanting to join me for one of my hilly 60-70 miles rides is probably slim, but the chance of me riding along with you folks is much higher. I’m open to suggestions, and since I don’t know the PG County area well, may have to rely on you all.

And I will bribe whomever it takes to get the picture from that awful seventh heaven show removed from our team page on Strava.

lol, that would be me. I was just trying to be clever to have a picture that went with our name instead of just a boring blank nothing. I’ve never watched the show, so I don’t really know how awful (or great) it was.

How much of a bribe are we talking about?? I’m pretty easy, so a Snicker’s Bar or a Little Debbie on ride sometime would probably be enough.

Sunyata has posted the official team list, but I’ll go ahead and add our team listing to this post to make it easier for us to see who’s on our team.

I’ll also list the members who have joined the Team 7 strava club, and will update it for a few days until we get everyone to join. If you haven’t yet, please do so. Here is that link again: https://www.strava.com/clubs/bafs18-team7

I rode a mile while I was in Dade City, FL before heading home and driving 900 miles. I think I should get some sort of percentage credit for being in a car for 900 with my bike in the trunk! Especially on New Years Day!! Even 10% would probably get me close to winning this. (Especially since I left FL willingly to come back to this frigid weather)

I shall also be there (probably one of the few people not on a bike). And just me, since I don’t like people!

And I guess you’re all right about the end of the year nonsense. I guess it’s just a coincidence that I just happen to register at the end of the year. Those emails are never seen again.

That’s a hard question. People are different. I can ride into the upper 20’s with just a few pairs of socks and my regular shoes as long as the sun is out. My problem is my face, since I have problems trying to breath when I wear a balaclava. (P.S. I do a lot of hills, so I need to breath in order to climb). My other problem is that I don’t really enjoy riding in the frigid weather, so I only have regular water bottles. My water freezes if it gets too cold.

I have a Bellwether jacket, then when used with a mid-weight base layer will handle low 20’s for quite a while. I’m also good with a pair of Sugoi or Bellwether tights into the 20’s. I also have an assorted array of gloves and glove liners that will get me into the low 20’s, also. If it gets colder than that (and it’s sunny with no wind) I can just add an extra layer for warmth. I’ve been know to wear two pairs of tights, and up to four top layers.

Personally, I don’t need to ride in extreme conditions, so I don’t. I guess if you need to commute daily, you need advice from a daily commuter. I also figure that the odds are stacked against us cyclists when it comes to cars, so I do my best to avoid inclement weather. But if you have to do it, then you need lots of additional stuff.

Will we get a confirmation email that we have been accepted? The registration process isn’t exactly straight forward, and with all the clicking on the assorted links, who knows what may end up happening. I think I did everything I was supposed to do, but haven’t seen any type of confirmation.
