I have over 500 miles on in since I bought it 6 weeks and 2 days ago. It’s in the shop now, I had some lower crank noise when climbing. Normally I would mess with it myself but since it is so new I figured I would have them do it.

Not really for new cyclists, but in the bridge theme a longish 26 mile one-way ride starting at in VA crossing the Potomac on Chain Bridge, riding down the C&O/CCT to Georgetown, recrossing on the Key Bridge, down the MVT, recrossing on Roosevelt Bridge, past the Kennedy Center along the waterfront past the Lincoln Memorial and over Memorial Bridge to Arlington Cemetary. Then down the MVT to the 14th St (George Mason) Bridge, past the Jefferson Memorial, a lap around Hains Point then recross the 14th St Bridge, down the MVT past Reagan/National, through Alexandria, cross the Wilson Bridge and arrive at National Harbor.

I like that, a short 26 miles after work or a Sunday recovery ride…If we started in Old Town and ended in National Harbor we could ride the water taxi back. Tim is much better at planning routes than I am, I always end up on some super highway that looked cool on Google. I should not be allowed to plan rides. :(

The other day we were out for a ride and I went to pass two people (man and woman). I stated that I was passing and proceeded to do so with plenty of room. The guy decided he wanted to race and sped up leaving me in the other lane with a jogger coming. I passed him, but not being ready for him to jump like that I was not ready to hammer it out. Very inappropriate. I have found that even when you warn people sometimes they just don’t care. So be careful…

How about 25 miles miles out for a BBQ sandwich and 25 miles trying not to puke on the way back. Both ways at a fairly solid 17.5 miles per hour.

There are small ones available that give a single “ding”.
All the bells I have seen mount with a small screw.
The can be small enough that you can leave them on there for all of your riding.
You won’t even notice it’s there, until you use it.
Check out your handlebars before you buy to see if the mounting area is oversize (ie. wide).
Some bells will open enough to mount on an oversize bar, some will not.
This one would mount on most size bars.

And only ten bucks, Thanks Chris.

I find the commute from W&OD through Custis to be fairly open and people to be friendly and cooperative. Although I do not use a bell at this point I have been considering one. What kind would someone recommend? I would like one that is easily removed as I do not have a special commuter bike.

I agree with bug…a high and tight was my first thought. Seriously though, I have a cycling cap I wear sometimes and I keep hair cream in my desk.

Military Misery sounds like a lot of fun. We may have to incorporate that into our own ride as well.

Great points. I did not know that the orange cones meant to walk. I don’t ride that route though so I have not encountered that.

Great point Tim. Additionally for myself; I save about $8 a day in gas commuting by bike. I get to work with a lot more energy (believe it or not) and I get a huge laugh every morning when I zip over 66 and look down on the parking lot they call a highway.

The fact that your taking a general statement of safety so personally is what I was referring to. I too ride that area from time to time and I agree with what you are saying, it’s not a good as it should be and we are forced to ride out of the bike lane due to the debris and construction. But as a general statement, we, meaning all of us and not a personal attack on you or anyone here, should be mindful of our surroundings, aware that cars often do not care about us and take some personal responsibility for our own safety.

Well, my point was, and I believe I actually stated that we need to take some personal responsibility as well. Taking personal responsibility is the only way we can expect the same from others. The fact you some people become immediately defensive over someone saying they should take some personal responsibility is a clear indication of that persons thought process and mental state. It is also indicative of a large systemic problem. So please let me apologize for suggesting that someone take some personal responsibility.
