I’m glad this forum has an “undislike” feature since I don’t like giving dislikes because I like to be a positive person. But in fairness to me, someone was talking poorly about Lost Dog. “This aggression will not stand!”

There really is plenty of room out there for all kinds of pizza. Pupatella is good, but Lost Dog just happens to have the best variety.

Thanks for the undislike. I don’t not like you too!

I will not derail this thread any further with my opinions on ranking local pizza places. I find it interesting that several posters consider Lost Dog the best of the three because they have the greatest variety. By that logic, Magna and Huffy are better bikes than the high-falutin’ brands many of us ride, due to their wider model range.

You made the right choice. Italian Store is good NY style pizza. Pupatella is good Neopolitan style pizza. Lost Dog pizza might be useful as an emergency wheel for my wife’s recumbent trike, but has little merit as food.

I would like to join this event – it would have to be a last minute decision, though, since I have a complex meeting schedule that day and I won’t know when I’ll be done until I’m done.

This morning I was heading south on the very same bike lane. As I was passing the Arlington Ed Center a car turned right into the parking lot right in front of me, almost hitting me. I must say that I ride the Quincy St. bike lane all the time and don’t usually have problems, but all it takes is one time!

My friend Gail trying out her new towing capability. If I can figure out how to manage the Spout Run and Rosslyn serpentines, I could definitely make it from my house to the Columbia Island boat ramp on this rig …

Let me offer my slightly belated thanks to Brünø for having recognized my cøffee-related efforts in this year’s BAFS. I was delighted to discover that the beans were green. Waiting for this infernal wind to die down so I can roast them.

I’m already thinking coffee-related thoughts about next year …

Hey elw – I doubt I will win this one, but I want to put in my entry for rides in most states (or is this something the data gurus can run automagically?):

    I have:
    Virginia
    Maryland
    DC
    Colorado
    California

    for 5

Five. That’s very impressive. I have the following nine: Virginia, Maryland, DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Mississippi.

I biked to Westover just this morning for breakfast at Village Sweet … but my starting pint was the “wrong side of the tracks” (just south of I66). North of Lee Hwy is too fancy for me.

I forgot to mention that in part because of my recent enthusiasm for cycling my wife, who hasn’t ridden in many, many years, just purchased a bike!

Another newbie here. Having grown up in an urban environment, cycling has always been a part of my life, primarily as transportation and casual leisure. When I recently decided to focus a little more on riding for fitness/recreation I was surprised to discover that, around here at least, riding a bicycle is a complex and exclusive endeavor requiring elaborate outfits, a near full-time obsession with gear, and with a high bar in terms of minimum capabilities. I decided to participate in FS for two reasons: (1) to motivate myself to keep up bike commuting through the winter, and (2) as a way into the cycling community. I figured that the common bond of being out there in the freezing cold would overcome the social barrier of my not being a Serious Cyclist. I have found that participation has exceeded my expectations on both counts. My days ridden in the winter have gone from ZERO in past years to 32 (so far). I cannot think of any previous year when I would have biked to work the morning after a snowstorm. I have enjoyed participating in AM coffees. And it has gotten me to do some fun, kooky things – like 1.01 miles of laps in the dark around an industrial park in Mississippi on a borrowed cruiser bike. In addition, FS has been my introduction into the forums and has occasionally provided me with bragging rights when talking to Serious Cyclists who are not winter riders. I am really enjoying participating.

Did you go ride more than before? Yes

    Did you want to? Yes

Does winter riding seem easier now? Yes

    More fun? Yes

Do you go riding out in the snow for fun? Yes

Did seeing other riders out there inspire you? Yes

Did seeing the scores/data motivate you? Yes

So W&OD from Powhatan to Custis is clear, and then Custis is passable to George mason, is that right? I rode from Dunn Loring on streets, in Arlington Washington Blvd and Clarendon, and they were passable but it’s gonna be much worse tomorrow during rush hour .

Not quite. W&OD was clear from Powhatan (I have heard it is clear all the way to Sycamore, but don’t know that first hand). Custis was too snowy to ride starting at the S-curve under I66. I walked it until Geo Mason then gave up.

How did you get to the W&OD? Ride cleared sidewalks or portage?

A combination of sidewalks and carrying the bike. Access @ the end of Powhatan St. is pretty clear. I was inspired by seeing you out on Saturday!

I biked roughly W&OD Mile 4.5 to Virginia Square this morning (about 8 AM). The first part of W&OD was in great shape – with some easily managed icy spots. Custis east from the S-curve had been plowed at some point but there was enough snow that it was unrideable on my MTB (it looked like someone had made it through on a fat bike earlier). I gave up on the trail @ George Mason & took the streets from there. George Mason and Wilson Blvd were easily rideable.

Which leads me to the question, why would they half-plow the trail? They did enough work to ruin the section near my house for XC skiing, but didn’t clear it enough for biking.

Coffee in Brooklyn is properly purchased from one of three types of establishments: a corner bodega, a diner, or with a hot, fresh bagel. Yes, yes, Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts have metastasized their way through the city in recent years, but they are not true New York. It was cold and snowy when I awoke – too cold for the ride I had planned, since I hadn’t brought the appropriate gear for wind chills in the teens. I settled for a quick jaunt to a bagel store, where I got a “cawwfee” (note that here, “regular” means milk & sugar) and a cinnamon raisin bagel.

The coffee was Vassilaros, the old school New York roaster. The method was a Bunn Pour-o-matic. The view was of Sheepshead Bay.

Note that one does not have to ride this kind of distance to get a bagel in Brooklyn – I passed at least three other bagel stores along the way. I just wanted a little more of a ride.
