Do you actually use the bike lane on Clarendon Cannonball?
Yup. I know I am in the minority here, but I rarely take a lane if riding solo. When on a bike I view myself more as a pedestrian than a vehicle. I tend towards box turn lefts, too.

ParticipantWhat section are your seats? Maybe I’ll come find you during the game.

which has no bike lane, a very busy intersection at Ft. Myer Drive and is challenging even to cross since it is filled with drivers who come out of Arlington Ridge Road like it’s the turn onto the straightaway at Summit Point.

Even better was if the light was red at Oak, then I would cross Lee Highway and take the counterflow car lane
No bike lane, poor sight lines. Have almost been hit there.

Your other option is to exit the Custis somewhere upstream before Courthouse and take the Clarendon Blvd. Cannonball straight on in.
I often take the streets starting at Glebe. The cannonball does have a bike lane, but is not without its share of excitement, particularly around the curve at Oak St.
Thank you for your suggestions. While I have ridden all the roads you mention and find them all to be pretty nasty (I think the curving, hilly nature of the roads in Rosslyn makes the neighborhood worse than downtown DC), it’s possible you may stumble upon that one excellent, car-free road through Rosslyn that I have missed on my daily commutes.

Is it my imagination, or is there more construction this year all over the DMV than in past years? It seems like every ride which I make involves some sort of detour.
I can’t speak region-wide, but there’s a burst of construction in Arlington such that every one of my routes to work (EFC to Rosslyn) has some form of construction/repaving/giant trail-blocking pipes going on right now.

ParticipantMany people talked up this ride, so I’ve signed up. After all, someone has to finish last

ParticipantThis performance will be accordion-lite, since I had to stop playing for a while last year and haven’t fully picked it back up. But there will be lots of good music on accordion and other instruments!

ParticipantI can’t commit to the ride until I know my gig schedule, but I would love to be the Ed Koch-like mayor. In Ghostbusters II he has one of my favorite lines of all time.

ParticipantSorry, I can’t go because I already have plans with friends that day. Wait … the plans are to go to the game. Hope to figure out a way to see y’all there!

I would love to see your street route home. Some nights I just can’t take the Pathletes.
Sorry for the late response … I have been behind in my forum reading.
I work in Rosslyn, so I start out on 19th St. into Key Blvd. Just where Key swings north and becomes Scott St. I take the secret trail with the harrowing drop through the apartment complex to connect to the next section of Key Blvd at Rhodes St. Then it’s Key Blvd. -> Jackson St. -> 13th. St. -> Quincy and from there I take a number of different routes to get to the W&OD.

ParticipantYuck. The detour is going to dump the entire Custis traffic onto my favorite street route home. The whole reason I take Key Blvd is to avoid the Lycranauts, Cat 6 racers, eBikers, and other common Custis pests.

ParticipantHere’s a photo of the Madison Manor Park bridge this morning (connects the W&OD to N. Powhatan St. via the Aronson/Claeys bikeway just west of Mile 4.5). This may happen again tomorrow if the rains are as predicted.

It’s going to be a bit of a cluster, that’s for sure. I’d say it’s too bad the park service just redid the trail design and parking lot except that it’ll be years before it’s torn up from construction.
Private boaters wanting to park in the parking lot to drop off boats will presumably have the same access issues everyone has now; e.g., the parking lot can only be accessed heading northbound on the parkway. Traffic can be so bad there during rush hour as to make it almost unusable during that period.
The plan emphasizes that there will be no road access to the docks. It’s pretty much meant for the exclusive use of rowing teams which store shells there. Private boaters not welcome – which is one of my major objections to the plan. As a sop to the paddling community they’re going to create a small car-top launch at Roaches Run. I agree that in practice people will park at TR Island parking lot and carry their boats over to the dock – assuming they’re even allowed to use it.

ParticipantI think we need to expand the nomenclature, as it’s not just one intersection: Rosslyn is a full-on neighborhood of doom (NOD). Getting from Custis to my office at Wilson & Kent is a daily exercise in terror. Except, that is, for the days when I come up the MVT and have to swim upstream against the peloton that gathers at the IOD and then bombs down the MVT ramp when the light changes. My other routes (Wilson Blvd, ey Blvd) are equally hairy.
I know the county has some projects in the works to improve Rosslyn’s bikeability, but they won’t do much to improve my Rosslyn ride.
