ParticipantHappy National Old Stuff Day!
My “daily driver” bike counts as old stuff. I think it’s ten years old – I bought it used five years ago and it was far from new then. In honor of the holiday I was going to ride it this morning, but the creaky old thing had flatted out overnight. Well, I got all passive aggressive and decided that to get back at my bike I would just ignore it and lavish my attention on my (even older) kayak instead today.

ParticipantIn recognition of National Rare disease Day I biked through the part of Arlington where my aunt Marion and Uncle Si used to live. A little bit on Aunt Marion’s connection to rare diseases:
“In the 1970s, the FDA began to investigate what it saw as a gap in the development of therapies for certain patient populations. In June 1979, an interagency taskforce issued a report to the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare (predecessor to Health and Human Services) addressing the lack of development of “significant drugs of limited commercial value.” The taskforce found that many drugs essential for diagnosis or treatment of “rare diseases” were not available mainly because “research, development and production are deemed too expensive relative to expected economic return.”
The taskforce on significant drugs of limited commercial value was chaired by FDA’s Associate Director for New Drug Evaluation, Marion J. Finkel, M.D. After publication of the report, Dr. Finkel was named as FDA’s first Director of Orphan Products Development in 1982, and, in this position, she played an instrumental role in FDA’s implementation of the ODA. Additionally, it was Dr. Finkel who championed use of the term “orphan” exclusively for therapies for rare diseases. Accordingly, even though she did not coin the term, we have Dr. Finkel to thank for our use today of the term “orphan.” Additionally, we can also be grateful that her doing so moved us away from the less euphonious term: “significant drugs of limited commercial value” (imagine a law entitled the “Significant Drugs of Limited Commercial Value Act of 1983”!).”

ParticipantI was overdressed on my BIKE RIDE home from work today and so was overheated by the time I got home. I cooled off with some pistachio ice cream for National Pistachio Day.

Yes, Accordioneur, I RODE MY BIKE there. You can see my bike in the picture.
Pfft. That could be anyone’s bike. Next time, please make sure the serial number is visible in the photograph.

I rode my bike to the CVS where I purchased the toy. Does that assuage your doubt?
Sorry, reji – I didn’t mean to rat you out, but I was incensed by SteveO’s questioning of my post when many other posts have at best implicit references to cycling. I suspect he is targeting me because he still holds a grudge over Warming Climate

It’s not clear how you included your bike.
There appears to be selective enforcement of the bike connection. For example, is reji’s cat Marbles a bicycle? In the case of this ride, the chili was eaten to warm up after I biked home from the Virginia Hospital Heart Health Fair. See this ride. The chili was actually prepared the previous evening, but y’know my people start our holiday observances in the evening rather than the morning.

Recipe #1: I adapted reji’s plum pudding recipe (“Hey, honey, how about making sweet potatoes with dinner tonight?”)
Recipe #2: Sweet potato and black bean chili

ParticipantThank you reji for the mint chocolate M&M’s this monring! I’m sure the sugary candy I ate for breakfast had nothing to do with my (only slightly belated) observance of National Toothache Day

ParticipantI celebrated “Do A Grouch a Favor Day” by visiting the Muppets at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. True to his cantankerous nature, Oscar did not make an appearance.

ParticipantHad some queso in honor of National Cheddar Day. Burned off some of the calories in my first ever experiment with a Peloton bike, which was enjoyable and creepy at the same time. I really don’t need some virtual instructor telling me how cycling is going to become a lifestyle for me if I just stick with it. But thanks, virtual instructor, for complimenting my booty.

ParticipantNot knowing what plum pudding is, I looked it up and discovered it is a “Christmas pudding … traditionally composed of thirteen ingredients, symbolizing Jesus and the Twelve Apostles.” At that point I realized I was totally out of my element and so just ate some dried plums as a way of observing the day.

You have to admire W&W’s cleverness. She found a way to get the hunkiest guys in Freezing Saddles (as well as SteveO) to post shirtless pictures of themselves.

For those of you keeping track, yesterday was the halfway point of this year’s Occasionally Inclement (formerly “Freezing“) Saddles.
SteveO is just hinting that he wants a return of the “Warming Climate” prize – you can see it in his post, you can see it in his recent Strava photos.
