Since The Washcycle isn’t posting a Christmas Wish List this year, I thought that maybe we could take on that task. What are your top 3 bike-related wishes for 2013 and beyond? They can be related to bike infrastructure or they can be personal items, like a new bike, new bike gear, etc.

    My top 3:

    1) Widen the Mt. Vernon Trail, especially from the 14th St. Bridge to Old Town Alexandria.

    2) Improve and widen the bike path from the 14th St. Bridge in D.C. to E. Basin Drive, in front of the Jefferson Memorial. That hill is dangerous because the path is so narrow.

    3) Aero race wheels!

How old is your daughter? I might be able to help with this one.

    2) I want to do some really cool rides with people that I love. Some will be epic in distance or duration, others will be epic in fun. I’m all about being able to look back at some cool pictures, videos, GPS plots and laugh about the events of the year over a beer.

    1. Yesssssssss.

    2. Have a dedicated SS/FG bike. Ride it like a mofo.
    3. Lynn St intersection.

#2 will be the easiest. #1 will be the most fun. #3 will be the most beneficial for other people.

Veering a bit off topic, but one of my favorite bike rides is to ice cream. Bike to Fall Church to Lazy Sunday, or to Vienna to Stone Cold, or to Shirlington to FroYo. If it has ice cream, it is a legit weekend destination!

Custom paint job for the bike.

Speaking of which…any recommendations for local places that will do this?

1- I want to take more of my grandsons on rides

2- I want to be in more bike traffic jams on ordinary weekdays, not just on major WABA rides

3- I want to routinely find all the bike racks full when I go shopping so I can write a letter to the management asking for more bike parking.

Well with 1 & 2, we did get a stocking stuffer gift when they fixed the horrible triple bump near the GWP onramp crossing on MVT (just north of it).

Here’s mine, without a ton of thought and planning,

    1) Actually start Kidical Mass Arlington (instead of just saying I will in my head).
    2) Work against the horrible plan at my office to have no bike parking and no showers during a 2-year renovation.
    3) Sleep for longer than 3 hours at a time.
    4) A more bike-friendly Arlington Public School system.
    5) A more bike-friendly Arlington County Police Department.
    6) Bike specific infrastructure along the Custis.
    7) A bike friendly Lee Highway.

1-2 are really resolutions; 3-5 are quasi-resolution/wishes (I only have partial say into whether they’ll happen), and 6-7 are more like wishes. But a gal can dream…

    My wish list:

    1. Better traffic enforcement for all modes.
    2. Safety improvements at Lynn and Lee
    3. Bike accommodations the full length of Columbia Pike.
    4. The Army Navy Drive Cycle track
    5. The Long Bridge Park>>MVT trail connection.

And as long as I’m dreaming…
    6. VDOT to recognize and embrace transit, cycling and walking as modes of travel worthy of at least equal footing with the automobile.

Glad I got to type that one so I didn’t have to try to say it with a straight face.

    My thoughts

Target roadway improvements to make cycling safer and easier – repaving the stretch of Maine and East Basin Drive at 15th Street where even the pothole repairs have pothole repairs. Road is narrow, traffic is fast and heavy so we should avoid things that cause cyclists to swerve.

Substantive engagement with the Park Service – the current approach isn’t working and will get people hurt.

Federal policy on transit and transit subsidies that actually encourages cycling – how about allowing the current transit subsidy to be used to pay for CaBi membership, the bike commuter benefit, and some metro rides without being mutually exclusive?

The opportunity to continue to interact with fellow riders way above my skill level through BikeArlington, WABA and FCC – wait … I already have that.

    Have a great holiday everybody

    1. Whatever it is that makes this happen.

(i don’t like you either. cyclemeter says I have burned 124797 calories riding my bike in 2012, and YET I HAVE LOST ZERO POUNDS, despite not being particularly gluttonous.)

    2. A safe and pleasant route from the Woodrow Wilson bridge south through PG county.

    3. Hermione-purse-like panniers.

Not asking for much, really… ;)
