Introducing the What Would Pete Do (WWPD) Advocacy Award Program

We are fortunate to have a wide range of voices on this forum. And while we often talk about the problems and obstacles we face, there is also room to celebrate and recognize the good work that goes on among us.

No one embodies the positive qualities of biking more than Pete Beers (Dirt). He is a walking encyclopedia of all things related to bikes. He has done everything humanely possible on a bike, and probably several things beyond. He builds them, fixes them, rides them, and shares this technical knowledge to anyone who asks. He can give advice on what to wear when riding in all kinds of weather, where to ride, how to ride, and what not to do.

But more important, Pete represents a generosity of spirit when it comes to biking. He welcomes everyone who wants to ride, from small kids on borrowed bikes, to older folks just trying to keep the rubber side down. He works hard at being an educator informs and help others, including motorists, about how to be safe while sharing the road.

In order to extend Pete’s philosophy, I’d like to introduce a new advocacy award dedicated to the proposition that given a difficult situation, asking yourself “What Would Pete Do?” will usually get you to the right answer.

This award will be given to bicyclists who fulfill the philosophies embodied by WWPD:
    • Welcoming: Extending a hand to new riders with a friendly and inviting attitude by helping, encouraging and supporting novices
    • Education: Anyone who helps teach rules of the road, bike etiquette, safety, visibility or advises on other aspects of riding
    • Advocacy: Speaking up on behalf of the cycling community to promote awareness, or understanding of the needs of cyclists
    • Positivity: Turning a potentially bad situation into something good through calm reasoning, polite interaction, or respectful disagreement

The Award: An almost one-of-a-kind WWPD bike sticker for each person who participates in this awards program.

Nominations should be made on the forum. You can nominate yourself or someone else. The only requirements are the person should be willing to accept the award and place the sticker on their bike. Pete will be the Chief Award Giver of the WWPD Program.

At the end of the Frozen Saddles season, several winners of particular distinction will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the WWPD program.

Thank you for participating in this program!

I was thinking “the Dirties” but Peties works well. Also WRT rule #57 these are decals, not stickers, as they are extremely PRO.

I think we need to defer to KelOnWheels as the self-decaled arbitor of stickers on that. ;)

And what about the “Dirty Peties”?

I haven’t checked Urban Dictionary, but I have a feeling that means something very different.

I must defer to the Velominati and arbitrarily declare these to be decals, which are indeed extremely pro. :D

    Alrighty then!

I’ll attempt to steer this back on track by nominating:

Jason B., a teacher at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington who is recruiting and nurturing the next generation of cyclists via his participation with the Washington-Lee Bike Club. Club members, under his supervision, have learned bike maintenance, gone on group rides, participated in cyclocross and even been involved in advocacy by giving out lights with Bike Arlington. Jason B. even set up a workshop at school so the students can work on their bikes.

Jason B., thanks for exhibiting the qualities that characterize WWPD-style advocacy.

    Thanks, Liz.

I nominate Rod Smith, who is out there every day (except in November and December apparently), showing the DC-area that you can move things by bike. And he’s an extremely nice guy.

I nominate SteveO and Zanna for volunteering their time as instructors at the Confident City Cycling Class I attended.

I nominate acc and ArlingtonRider for all the volunteering they do at various events.

I nominate Tim Kelley for all the BikeArlington work he does.

I nominate all the folks who have put in the behind the scenes effort (e.g., programming, advertising) to get Freezing Saddles off the ground and running.

I nominate CyclingEconomist (since departed for CA) for hosting a repair clinic last summer.

I nominate whoever is responsible for keeping this website up and running on a daily basis (the Wizard behind the curtain?).

I nominate dbb for keeping the lines of communication open with NPS (and other bureaucrats) on all things cycling.

I nominate dasgeh for Kidical Mass.

I nominate MegaBeth for HP 100 and her work with WABA and Women on Bikes (sorry, don’t recall the exact name of the group).

I know I’m forgetting some folks. Please don’t be offended!

I nominate Liz (eminva) for training, planning and leading a troop of boy scouts on a 185 mile ride on the C&O. And for the inspirational article in the Washington Post. And for speaking on a panel at the FABB summit. And for making Ann (acc) do the moco epic with her. And for still riding with me even though I repeatedly try to lead her to certain death crossing Gallows Road on the WOD.

+1 on the eminva nomination. Liz is the best.

I should be taken off KLizotte’s list. I had a very un-Pete like moment recently when I put rushing to get to a meeting at work above lending my on-the-bike pump to someone who asked for it. Luckily, Eminva was nearby and stepped in to offer hers. I don’t know what I was thinking – it probably would have taken only a minute or two, assuming my 1998 Trek pump still works. I still feel bad about that.

I re-nominate Arlingtonrider for being a joyful presence, even on days when she has to get to work ;-)
