Could be worse–you could be jogging and not have that lovely breeze.

Sounds like a lovely day for a bike ride. :D

Be wise and be careful. Have fun!

There’s also a code red air quality warning: “A CODE RED AIR QUALITY ALERT MEANS THAT AIR POLLUTION CONCENTRATIONS WITHIN THE REGION ARE UNHEALTHFUL FOR THE GENERAL POPULATION. THE EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION CAN BE MINIMIZED BY AVOIDING STRENUOUS ACTIVITY OR EXERCISE OUTDOORS.”

An early morning/late evening ride is probably best.

I think before 11am or so should be fine tomorrow. Afternoon looks like it’ll be bad. Forecast for next week is temps going all the way back to average: maybe even some days that don’t hit the 90s! Looking forward to that!

Looks like 106 was the record for DC set July 20th, 1930.

I’ll be cycling and running on Saturday. Maybe swimming too, if I have time. I’m hoping to do a long run of 2 hrs. I probably won’t run at midday. I’ll also keep the effort relaxed. Same with the bike ride.

I bought a Klean Kanteen insulated stainless steel bottle last week. It works well. Much better than the plastic Chill Jacket insulated bottle. I brought both bottles on a ride last weekend. After 90 min., the water in the Chill Jacket was very warm and nasty. I finished that bottle first. Then I refilled the Chill Jacket with the water from the Klean Kanteen. That water was still as cold as when I first filled the bottle. I’ll bring both bottles from now on. The Chill Jacket is easier to drink from and remove from the aerobar bottle cage. Once that bottle is empty, I’ll refill it with cold water from the Klean Kanteen.

I can’t drink directly from the Klean Kanteen without stopping so I’ll use it only as backup water storage. Klean Kanteen also sells a bottle with a sport cap but I don’t think it’s insulated.

I find that dumping cold water on my head helps a lot in hot weather. Pouring water on my arms helps too. That provides a large surface area for evaporation and cooling.

In this kind of weather I’m usually soaking wet already–the big problem is that the humidity prevents evaporation.

9AM and it’s already disgusting outside.

I got all of my Clif Challenge trips in before 9 a.m. today, and 2 of them before 8 a.m. Kept them about as short as the scoring allows.

One trip was a research expedition through a shaded parking garage to see how many out of state license plates I could find there (zero). That counts, right? I might write a book about it someday. Fortunately, Best Buns opens at 7 a.m. and the Harris Teeter is open 24 hours. Stay cool!

Logged my first longish ride this morning – 41 miles, or four 10 mile rides logged for the challenge. W&OD was pretty crowded between Vienna and East Falls Church, 4MR and MVT less so. Edsell Road was deserted, and also crappy for riding.

The bad part was two flats within 30 minutes of each other.

Oh, and you folks are very bad influences on me.

Did a warm semi-hilly 20 mile ride at 8:00 this morning. Not too bad. The ride up Powhatan from Kirby was fun.

Lots of people riding on the W&OD before sunrise today. Great to see so many people get up early to beat the heat, although if you rode past about 7:30 you lost and the heat won.

Just did a 35 miler on the MVT. Most of the ride wasn’t too bad, but I started to feel it on the last 2 miles home, luckily for me two big downhills that gave a nice breeze.

I feel a little guilty for not doing a “real” ride this morning. You guys are awesome!

The way I look at it, today is for doing the chores I avoid and the errands I detest. Once the sun gets low enough I’ll do something but honestly, a swim looks more promising than a ride. Arlingtonrider, if you feel guilty enough you can come over and we can mop floors together. :D
