It isn’t clear that’s actually true. Is there an actual analysis of how much can be saved by rewriting the existing snow removal contract (are the lots broken out separately or is it basically a throw-in for doing everything else)? Is there an analysis of how much it would cost to acquire the trail clearing capability that doesn’t already exist? There’s a difference between a back of the envelope estimate of how much it would cost me to drive down a trail in a bobcat and the end result of the government procurement process.

The option of having NPS more effectively utilize current funding? Why, that is:

The most critical stretch of the MVT for snow removal is the stretch from Old Town to Memorial Bridge. I’d put the mile from Belle Haven through Jones Point Park and onto South Union street in Old Town as next most critical.

Oops, that would be about 2 miles for the stretch from Belle Haven through Jones Point Park to South Union street.

The NPS needs to look the the MVT as a commuter route just like the GW parkway. they need to clear it so it moves more people not cars.
