Woman killed by collision with cyclist

There are not many details in this article [WaPo], but the cyclist involved has been charged in the case. It’s unclear how serious the charges are (“disobeying a traffic device”). The article states that more charges could be on the way.

oh dear oh dear oh dear. The cyclist is not only a fellow cyclist, but appears to be Jewish based on his name, and seems to be roughly my daughter’s age. In addition to feeling horrible for the woman who died, can I also admit my stomach is tied in knots about the rider? (I skipped the WaPo comments, for my sanity).

All I can do, as Dirt would say, is ride and not be a jerk.

Everyone. Predictable, alert, and lawful (with only the safest exceptions). Save the Idaho’s for the pedestrian free suburban intersections.

Saw the article on Twitter today and dislike the misleading headline as I think very few people would equate “being charged” with what has really happened thus far which is, “received a traffic citation.”

Good point. I adopted the language of the article without really thinking about it.

The lack of details on the incident make it difficult to discuss without ungrounded speculation, so I’ll refrain from even trying.

That’s exactly how I feel. I’ve had plenty of pedestrians start to step in front of me, particularly in the 15th St. Cyclotrack, but I’ve more often seen cyclists show a total disregard for stop lights and pedestrians with the right of way (also particularly bad in the 15th St. Cyclotrack).

Based on what I’ve read, I’m willing to speculate. I assume the pedestrian had a walk signal and was killed by a negligent bicycle rider.

I don’t think it’s any secret that there is a lot of negligent bicyclist behavior around here. Is there any traffic law, besides speeding, for which bicyclists have higher compliance than motorists?

And yet, all that cyclist negligence notwithstanding, it is exceedingly rare that it causes the death of an innocent bystander. Such a story would have been barely newsworthy if the vehicle were a car. While all these fine WaPo commenters were typing up their righteous anti-cyclist screeds, their motorist brethren went out and killed another 100 Americans today.

It is a tragedy and one life lost is one too many. However, to put things in perspective, according to WashCylce this is the first pedestrian death cause by a cyclist in the DC area since 2012 and there have been only 9 such deaths in DC since 1905.
