This morning on my way to Green Lizard, I was diverted off trail at Van Buren st for Trail Repair. Seems that a repair is going in place to pave the trail from Elden to Isaac Newton. It’s much welcomed, in my opinion, as I hate the gaps and jarring blows one crosses/takes on the way out to Herndon.

The Town of Herndon site mentions taking input from residents, but no mention of the paving, just as an “intersection repair.” But my friend and resident of Herndon seems to think that the paving will go as far as Isaac Newton. Seems though the Trail report had something posted, so consider this the “Yes, they’ve started, and you may get detoured off the trail now” confirmation.

Yesterday they paved from Crestview all the way to the caboose. The had a clear “trail closed” sign blocking the trail, but no official detour. They are paving all the way into Reston as I understand. Check the W&OD blog. We’re having the Friends of the W&OD at the FABB monthly meeting tomorrow night. Come join us at Patrick Henry Library in Vienna at 7:30 pm.

This was posted on a Meetup.com group’s discussion page:

“According to a note posted on Facebook by the Reston Bike Club, the W&OD is scheduled to repaved starting next week between the “Private Drive” in Reston (west of Wiehle Avenue in the “office park” area and before you get to Old Reston Avenue going west) and Crestview Drive in Herndon (just past the small golf course, where “Trailside Park – Herndon” is located; it dips down and then back up at the street crossing). There was nothing specified as to how long the repaving is supposed to take and what, if any, detours will be in place during that time. Be careful out there.”

Oh good, that section can really rattle your teeth if you’re woolgathering.

The repaving is done from Private Drive (just west of Issac Newton) in Reston to at least Fairfax County Parkway. (I don’t know what’s going on west of the Fairfax County Parkway because I get off there.) Pavement is nice and smooth. Yesterday, they opened it up a little too soon after paving and I thought I was riding through sticky chocolate sauce, but it was firm by this morning and I didn’t see any grooves from skinny 120 psi tires.

This morning the demand button for the crossing at Van Buren immediately tripped the signal, in both directions. I think this is new. (The signal at Elden/Lynn was just as long as ever, though.)
