So, this morning I discovered this terrible section had just been re-paved, nice! I also, noticed a rogue commuter behind me do an unsafe pass just before going under the bridge and almost making some pedestrians go into the creek because he was going entirely too fast. It was even bad enough I ended up apologizing on behalf of the cyclist in front of me. I was going at least 17mph so it wasn’t like I was being a slouch!
I don’t want to be a downer but if you’re going to pass, do so well before going under the bridge where it’s dark and a narrow part of the trail. 3 people under that bridge side-by-side doesn’t work out too well…
A good point to remember! There are all too many of these limited sight lines underpasses on the MUPs in Arlington.

ParticipantA summer time fun option.
Arlco took the opportunity and posted wayfinding signs all over A-Town. Arlco missed the opportunity to simultaneously post trail etiquette signs. You know, something simple, something positive like
Dont shove people into creeks when passing them under bridges.
So as the months wander into the fury of summer, one option might be for us as the bikeborg collective to come up with a smart flier cleverly and loudly visualizing trail etiquette….. And then posting these all over the trails. There are bulletin boards and other legitimate propaganda displays throughout the parks. We could create a common flier – when it is baked – we could each print it out and post it in our little corners.
** Yes, Tim, Inc. made the great PAL posters. But they are not highly visible. My recommendation would be something very simple and very loud along the lines of
* Signal before you pass
* Pass only when safe
* Keep to the right
* Adopt a rescue dogSomething along those lines.

Sharing the Way! It comes in full color, black and white and even in Spanish! We’ve already got them printed off already if you’re to posting them on the trails. I’ve got some other stuff that would be great if you could post it too (Two Wheel Tuesday and Bike to Work Day stuff mostly).

My favorite real W&OD safety sign is one of a set of four near Ashburn, some of which are similar to the above suggestions. The amusing one, while I understand what they were intending to communicate, makes me giggle every time: “Slow when passing”. I often respond, out loud, “How does that work, exactly?”

Love the sharing the way posters, but they’re too complicated for users to digest in a quick glance. I really like the idea of signs with a single, simple message, maybe on flags or something. Things that runners, cyclists and peds can all grasp at a glance. “Slower users keep right” “Share the trail” “Signal before passing” “Enjoy this wonderful day” etc. The more you put on the sign, the more it will be ignored. Sorry.

Nice, though a bit hard to read at 15 mph.

Exactly. Something like these would be vastly more effective, esp. when wearing sunglasses!

PS – but perhaps with more MUT-appropriate messaging, of course.
