ParticipantCCrew,
How is the W&OD trail from Vienna to Reston? Is it passable? I need to get to Reston.
Thanks.

It was passable when I came through, but barely. Difficult Run may be underwater, and it was close to the two whoop de doos. at the bridge towards Clarks Crossing where they’re already having erosion problems looked like that’s possibly going to undercut the trail.
Here’s the park and Ride:

ParticipantWhat’d we do to piss off mother nature…an earthquake, a hurricane, and now this?

ParticipantWe already have that. It’s called “tourists in giant rain coats who don’t respond at ALL to ‘ON YOUR LEFT!'”.

ParticipantThe W&OD west of Ohio Drive and before East Falls Church was completely flooded with a fast moving river crossing the path at about 6:15-6:30ish this evening. I considered it impassable and took a detour on the streets. Thanks to the many kind citizens of North Arlington who gave me directions on my impromptu tour during a torrential downpour.
Next up: more rain!

ParticipantThis is going to be an interesting week. Even the areas that drain well were completely overwhelmed by the rain. The W&OD had a pretty good stream of water running down it… 6″ deep in spots. Storm sewers couldn’t handle the water and places like West street in Falls Church was easily 12″ deep in rushing water on my ride up it.

ParticipantPete, did you ride through that river on the W&OD right past Ohio Drive? You are brave. I stopped at the edge and took a look, and there were people on the Ohio Drive overpass yelling and whistling at me to turn back.

ParticipantI think 4 Mile Run east of EFC Metro was at its worst about 6 pm (right as I was getting home). On the W&OD the Carlin Springs underpass was flooded too deep to ride through and at the Wilson Blvd underpass the water was probably about six feet deep on the trail and moving very fast. At the electricity pylon split between Patrick Henry and Ohio Street the water was 8″ deep up to the I-66 sound wall. I didn’t go any further than Ohio. About half an hour later, the water had started to recede and was off the trail at the pylon. It was sill a mess at Wilson and on the trail through Bon Air by the bathroom the water was over three feet deep and moving so fast is was not safe to walk through. By the time (about 7:30) we had walked back around to Patrick Henry, the water level in the Run had dropped about four to five feet.
I took photos, but my card reader is on the fritz and I can’t download them to my computer.

ParticipantI rode through the W&OD past Ohio Drive. I was likely there a bit before you. It was 6″ deep and moving pretty fast. It was probably foolish. The roads in Falls Church were worse. They were deeper, not moving as fast, but it was hard to see where to ride. I know the roads very, very well, having ridden them over the last 20 years, so I didn’t have any problem.
Tomorrow should be interesting.

ParticipantThe W&OD past Ohio Drive was a fast moving river at 7:00 PM and not passable. There was cyclist tried to ride through it and almost got wash away. He stuck in it for more than 30 minutes and barely reach on other end alive.
I took the detour without any problem.

but we’re happier. I saw so many cars stuck in traffics everywhere. Today commute took only 5 minutes longer than a normal day commute.

ParticipantAt about 9:00 pm, the W&OD was gated at the intersection with the Custis. Went through anyway. No problems to Ohio St.
Just try to catch me coppers….

ParticipantRemember that when the storm sewers get overwhelmed, untreated sewage is flowing into the Potomac and possibly some of the local creeks. It’s not just regular river and creek water on days like this. I’ve heard estimates that 250 million gallons of sewage have spilled into local waterways this week. The old storm sewer system simply isn’t capable of handling large amounts of rainfall.
Riding through flooded trail sections is dangerous enough. But you may also want to disinfect your bike after coming into contact with that water.
