ParticipantThe Weather Channel has named this “storm” Iago, either after the main character in Shakespeare’s Othello or the parrot in Disney’s Alladin.

When did they start naming snow storms?

When they figured out it increased page views.

“THEY” being the Weather Channel only, started naming winter storms this year. Trying to separate themselves from other weather outlets including the NWS I guess.

ParticipantRode my regular road tires this morning. I’m skeptical we’ll get much, and it’s not cold enough for anything to stick. If I’m wrong then I’ll be pushing my bike a bit.

Participantuh, ok, I see a lot of talk about swapping out tires and now I’m worried. I hauled my bike (Trek roadie) to work today so I could ride home this afternoon vs. dealing with the helltway. Having worked pretty late Tuesday night, I can afford the luxury of leaving a bit early today. Am I going to be OK on 700x23c tires?

According to CWG, unless you’re going to commute down to Charlottesville, you should be just fine on 23s. Anything this side of the Potomac should see big wet flakes with little accumulation. You’ll want to be careful with slick-ish roads near/after sunset, but otherwise no different that most other days this week.
Edit: to include the latest CWG post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/post/rain-and-sleet-south-of-dc-to-edge-north-perhaps-transitioning-to-snow-late-today/2013/01/17/bc1664a0-60b1-11e2-b05a-605528f6b712_blog.html

ParticipantThe winter bike setup this morning sure seemed like overkill.

I winter bike set-up consisted of me singing my favorite Christmas song, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Syphilis” all the way to work.
Were you leaving the Barn at about 0700 this morning, sir? I thought I saw you heading toward the trail as I rolled by. If that was you, it was a good call to keep distance from the orange guy singing badly.

I was way overdressed for the ride in
I must discover a better glove solution!
Also, either someone stole my legs during the night and replaced them with boneless hams (the canned ones with the creepy jelly stuff), or I overtightened that loose rear brake and it was dragging. I was sure dragging, anyway.

I’m not quite sure if that song can be sung anything other than badly.

I just ordered a pair of the new MASH-Giro gloves in HI-VIZ yellow.
Also, I think that State Cycles just put out a brand new glove offering today too.
A little too lazy to link – Google is your friend.

ParticipantI dug out the Outdoor Research goretex overmitts for yesterday’s rainy commute. I’d forgotten how much I love those things. They’re really only good for road fixies or single speeds though, since they don’t really let you use the brakes with less than 4 fingers.
