Obscurerichard has now fixed the problems with the leaderboard that we were having yesterday and earlier today. If you’re not on it, please try these things before contacting him. (Note: obscurerichard is in charge of this. I am not in charge of anything other than getting you registered in the first place.)

    1. Have you ridden yet? You won’t be on it until you ride.
    2. Was your first ride within the past couple of hours? If so, please wait a couple of hours. The leaderboard does not update in real time.
    3. Have you joined the Freezing Saddles 2019 Strava club? If not, or if you’re not sure, please click on this link and go join.
    4. If none of the above is the problem, please go to https://freezingsaddles.org/authorize. Choose whether to authorize Freezing Saddles to read only your public Strava miles or both public and private miles. When you click on that, you will get to a second page. You can see on the screenshot, below, what the second page should look like if you authorize both public and private miles. You don’t have to give Freezing Saddles permission to read your private miles, but you do at least have to give it authorization to “View your complete Strava profile.” Once you have all the boxes checked that you want, you’ll need to click “Authorize” at the bottom of the page. That should cause you to appear on the leaderboard within a few hours. (This problem arises because Strava changed its authorization code in the middle of registration, not because of anything we did.)

Right now, we have 190 people assigned to 19 teams with maybe 20 people on the wait list.

If there really are another 200 people out there thinking they are playing Freezing Saddles, they need to please get themselves properly registered by this weekend so I can make team assignments before the HH. After this weekend, all bets are off because I won’t have time to make re-adjustments to teams. I will certainly substitute riders for those who drop out after the HH. And I might even create one additional “Misfit Toys” team. But I’m NOT going to try to create 10 more teams. Everyone will just be put on the wait list and you may get substituted in sometime during the game if someone gets injured.

So actually, there won’t be chaos. Just a lot people who be disappointed/pissed off that they’re not playing Freezing Saddles.

We have 326 members of the Freezing Saddles 2019 Strava club. We have only 166 people showing up on the leaderboards. This suggests that about half of you have not followed the instructions either in the original post in this thread, or in the e-mail I sent to all registrants. I would strongly suggest to all of you that you fix this problem ASAP, or we’re going to have chaos once team assignments are made.

Given that almost 50% are missing suggests to me that the problem lies not with the people, but with something else. When 1/2 of a group of highly educated and capable people are unable to accomplish a task, it means there is problem with the task, not the people. If it were 4% or 8%, one could point the finger at those people, but when it’s 50%, that means something entirely different.

A quick glance at the Freezing Saddles 2019 club on Strava leads me to believe that at least part of the “problem” is that there may be a lot of people who joined the club (since it’s not locked down as a private club) who never registered and aren’t playing. For example, I’m pretty sure this person isn’t playing since they’re not in the DMV or USA:

Yep – there are a lot of people who see the Strava club pop up in their feed (because a friend joined or whatever) and just compulsively join without any intent of doing more than being in the Strava club. Last year’s still has 313 members, and there are over 400 in the 2017 group.

It took me several attempts to de-authorize and re-authorize Strava before I got it to take. Even among those who have followed all the instructions, many may not have that level of persistence. Or may not realize–it took me a couple of days to–that my original authorization got broken somehow.

One must not only follow the instructions, but may have to follow the instructions more than once. I wouldn’t be surprised if some have tried their best and given up.

In fact, under settings in my Strava, it showed Freezing Saddles as an authorized app (for years, in fact) and I was still not on the leaderboard.

Yeah, Strava changed its code right in the middle of the registration process, which caused most of the prior authorizations to fail. Then it took some time to get our site set up so it would function properly with the new codes. I’m trying to get people to reauthorize now, but obviously this is a tough slog.

Yeah, at one point we had people register to be Slackers, and required them to be people who had played Freezing Saddles in the past. But since we stopped that, we include anyone who joins the Strava club as a Friend of BAFS–meaning we’ve got a lot of people who actually have nothing to do with Freezing Saddles.

When you do ask them to re-authorize, please direct them to https://freezingsaddles.org/authorize as this works a little differently from the login link. The login link won’t register people to show up on the leaderboard if they are not there already. If they haven’t previously done the https://freezingsaddles.org/authorize link it will show them the dread Athlete Not Registered error. I’m thinking about reworking this so that for next year, there’s just one link to authorize or login, and then we sort out the registered slackers and friends of BAFS when we do the team announcements.

This is weird. When I attempted to log in for the first time, it asked me to authorize. But I’ve edited the original post to direct people to the link you mention.

    It’s not nearly half, fortunately.

I imported the registrations into the Freezing Saddles database to help reconcile this. There’s 208 people who registered for the event, and 191 people have matching Strava IDs in the registration database. Of those 191 people, 11 who registered before the deadline haven’t yet re-authorized this year so that we can read their teams. 14 people who registered before the deadlinehave not yet visited https://freezingsaddles.org/authorize and given Strava permission to read their miles. So really there are at most 30 people who need to authorize still. I’ll send the reports to the team organizers so that we can take appropriate further action.

Remember, for 2019, when in doubt, do this: https://freezingsaddles.org/authorize

Thanks for looking at this. Only about half the people in the BAFS Strava club have authorized. But I guess people signed up for that who were neither registered nor intending to be Friends of BAFS.
