If you are a GoPro user, I am trying to decide on my first camera. I have sort of decided on the GoPro rather than a Contour due to the variety of mounting options and size. So here is my problem: which model of Hero3 (black, silver, white) should I get. The Black has much better video (probably mostly use 1080p @60fps) and very fast burst photo speeds, plus it comes with a remote). Silver has 1080p at 30fps max video, slower burst photos but still good, no remote. White has the same video capability as Silver but the burst speed for photos sucks, no remote.

Either way, I will mount the camera on a handlebar mount K-Edge system (I love their stuff).

    Questions:
1.) Mainly, I want this camera as video of evidence if I get hit or harassed. Being able to watch my rides will be nice too and post to Youtube for Forum enjoyment. I am not a filmmaker or video junky. Is the Black’s ability to record at 1080p at 60fps (it can to 4K res too but at 15fps) worth it for cycling applications or is the White Edition’s 1080p @30fps or 720p @ 60 fps perfectly fine for cycling.

2.) Pictures: I don’t often take pictures of rides cause I hate stopping and digging out my camera, etc. I wonder if I would take many more photos if I had the GoPro making the better still camera in the Black or Silver more worth the money?

3.) The remote: This seems like an item that would be worthless or awesome. It costs $80 as an accessory so buying it later on already gets you halfway toward the cost of the Black Edition (this version comes with remote) anyway. If I mount the camera below my handlebars on the K-Edge mount, the remote could be conveniently mounted to my stem to snap pictures and more often start and stop video (saving memory and power). Or, is it just easier to reach around to press the buttons on the camera while riding (note the K-edge mount will mount the camera upside down). As a user, do you think the remote would just be a novelty for cycling or a worthwhile item?

If the remote is a worthwhile item, then the extra money for Black is more attractive cause it essentially makes the better video and still camera a $100 upgrade compared to the lower end GoPro’s & buying the remote separately (making the $200 White Edition a $300 camera after buying the remote separately).

Anyway, in your experience what version would you buy would be a huge help? What version to you have now? Any other thoughts?

I may wait until the GoPro Hero4 comes out. Plus, Garmin is releasing a camera next month that I want to check out.

As a former owner of the GoPro Hero3 Black edition, I’m anxiously waiting the Garmin. Sad to the the Countour go. Price drop on the Sony camera has piqued my interest, but I’m still going to wait somewhat for the Garmin.

The Garmin looks interesting. Not sure about the formfactor. I like the increased battery life and ability to connect to other devices. Also, the adapter for GoPro mounts is a plus. I could use a Garmin camera on a K-edge handlebar mount. Price is a little high I think but I’ll wait and see how the reviews come out. GoPro may up the aunty soon as well.

Personally, I like that the better version is the Virb ELITE. And it’s white. Someone’s been reading the forum…

K-edge mounts are where it’s at. I use one with my Hero3 Black and it keeps things totally still.

Any lower cost alternatives to the Go-Pro? I’m pondering a camera just for documentation purposes if ever necessary, but i’m not sure I wonder if I need “full on HD awesomeness”.

We’ve gotten this off of Woot for $40 for a bundle. Works fine. We’ve also gotten this, similar deal, but just received it.
