I have the silver gopro. I’m not good at video editing, but you will learn. I can use the free iPhone app as a remote, it works but my opinion is its not needed for biking since you can easily hit the button manually. Sometimes I wish I had the higher frame rate to make better slow motion videos, but 30fps seems good to me.

Personally I don’t like watching helmet mounted videos, it’s funner to watch when the camera is lower, especially if you can see the wheel moving. I mount mine on the front shock.

I got the white version for my birthday and I really like it for video, the camera is pretty terrible, but that’s why I have a decent camera on my smartphone. I didn’t see any reason for the remote (I mount it on my handlebar) and my friends have had problems with the silver and black versions so I figured I’d test the white and if it worked I’d upgrade to the black once all the firmware issues were sorted out.

One thing you DO NOT want to do is buy the crappy plastic GoPro mount that’s $20. Spring for the K-Edge mount (you can use it upside down or right side up) and you’ll save yourself a TON of hassle. I used the crappy plastic GoPro mount when I did the Air force Cycling Classic and it was pretty much a disaster, the K-Edge on the other hand keeps the camera steady and secure no matter what terrain I’m on.

The still photos are pretty crappy though since they’re all super wide angle. The video quality is top notch though, especially at 1080p.

That’s a good point. Still photos would be very wide angle and have the sort of fish-eye effect no matter how good the camera is (i.e. even with the Black Edition). Am I correct?

    Hmm…..

Hmm, I haven’t had any problems with still photos. Seems like a normal view to me, not fish eye. You can change the setting I think. I really like my gopro.

Yeah, I am looking at some of the pictures taken from the GoPro and they looking pretty good. If its to wide you can always crop them. Leaning Silver or Black now.

I have never taken a photo with my gopro hero3 white edition. I just print screen the video replay. Works just fine. The video quality is awesome too. I’ve had some issues with camera steadiness using the helmet mount. I’ve seen other helmet mount videos that are steady as a rock, and I have no idea how they do it. Because of this I’m considering switching to a handlebar mount.

Thanks everyone. Does anyone here actually own the Black Edition? Your thoughts would be hugely appreciated.

Gopros are expensive, the case is what saves them. With that being said, I decided to purchase two used hero2 cams. They came with nearly all mounting accessories because they were used. Also, the Hero3 still has bugs to be hashed out.

I sent one gopro to Ragecams for modification to have a 4mm lens installed to get the fisheye out & use it for driving. I had to send it out because I fell while shooting a video and scratched up the lens bad, I posted the video for forum enjoyment (i didn’t enjoy it though).

If the $$$ is burning or hole in your wallet, go grab the H3, if not then think used and save the dough for mounting accessories or bicycle nicknacks. Don’t forget to post your videos here for our enjoyment.

I haven’t had one problem with a mount, but like I said, the case saves the camera…. Perhaps the mount is poo

I have a contour roam, primarily to have an on-the-bike cam. The form factor is its strongest plus. It fits nicely on the handlebar. It looks like another bike light. The mount is okay. A big rubber strap. Lacking the right tension, it will slip (I need to fix that). The mount is held together by ~three plastic pins – because of the way I stored my bike (a bungy cord holding it up, pushing against the mount), it failed. The picture quality is bug eyed and ok. But its an on the bike always camera – I did not buy this for video quality. If I wanted video quality I would have gone with the gopro or something like the Nikon Coolpix AW100. I have caught LOTS of curious pictures with it, including a nice pic of One-Eighth this week:

That is a screen capture from the Contour video.

I just bought the Nikon because my pocket camera failed. Pocket camera’s dont seem to like to be in bike bags, so I wanted something more rugged. There are no moving parts. It is water proof to 33′ and drop proof to 5′. It has some nice “easy” features. It has a mount screw hole in the bottom so I could imagine using a gorilla tripod and mounting this in fun ways. Here is a pic from the Nikon that I took last night:

The Contour Roam is a good handlebar camera if that’s what you want. If you want amazing video, go with the GoPro or the Nikon.

Mr. OnWheels mentioned last night that he thought I should get a GoPro so I can record my cycley adventures :) So looks like Silver might be the way to go?
