I’m traditionally a cold-wuss. I’ll still ride, but I’m layered up like the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man when the temps hit 30s.

This year, I’m attempting to change that. 45 degrees when I left this morning, and I dressed in normal summer gear. Shorts, short sleeve jersey, and fingerless gloves. The first mile was brutal, but the rest of the ride was actually quite pleasant. Chilly, but pleasant. Had to prove to myself that I can do it.

In case there are any other new riders like myself who are scrambling to buy warmer clothing, I point to Dirt’s excellent “Layers 101” thread: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?312-Layers-101

    Wool is a good thing.

Perfect morning today. :D Summer base layer, mid-weight, long sleeve jersey, wind vest, knee warmers and roubaix (fleece-lined) cycling shorts.

Got to try out the new Belgian shoe covers too. To answer your question, Belgian shoe covers are basically really big socks with a very durable weave for the bottom. They’re lovely for dry rides in the 40s and 50s.

As is the norm, we’ll all likely be riding home with at least some of what we wore in our bags, rather than on our bods. Should be a lovely afternoon for the long way home.

    Enjoy it!

    Pete
