I stepped out of the office this evening to find that my wheels/tires had been stolen off of my Motobecane bicycle. It was parked very publicly at the Van Ness Metro bike parking, alongside many other bikes, right beneath the security camera (we are not allowed to bring bikes into our office building, which offers no bike parking). The police came and I filed a report, for what that’s worth.
I lugged home the bike skeleton on two very crowded metro trains and another 1.5 miles. The other passengers were very kind and accommodating. By now my arms are strong enough to beat up any thieves :)
I am very sad. I keep reminding myself that nobody got hurt and they didn’t get my frame, which was U-locked.
Watch out for thieves.
Your friend,
&wings

I am listening to each and every suggestion, and will likely be using more than one. I park my bike on poles everywhere… in Baileys Crossroads, Seven Corners, Tysons, all throughout DC, etc. So it’s important to have safeguards for the full range of circumstances….
Perhaps I should just buy a tank. :)

Well… you have to be careful with those too. They probably should have used a u-lock to secure this one ;)

This news sucks. I’m so sorry. Damn goniffs!!!!

You might also consider removing the front wheel and locking everything up together with one U-lock. You want a lock the “just fits” so there’s no room to maneuver a tool inside to cut it.

I do have a set of wheels sitting around (Zipp 303s) that I’m happy to give you.

Sorry about your wheels. I’m not a big fan of carrying bulky, heavy locks, so please take a look at this – http://www.kryptonitelock.com/content/kryt-us/en/products/product-information/current-key/001768.html

wheels&wings, I’m sorry this happened to you. And good on *everyone* for helping her.

Here’s a flip side I observed last month. On my way back from a Dr’s appointment in the Virginia Square neighborhood, I saw this sad moment (no, not my bike, but still…)

This sucks. People are effers. I suppose it’s better to lose the wheels than the frame, but it’s really still such a feeling of violation. Bikes don’t feel like material things to most of us.

One alternative to two U-locks or one U-lock and one cable is one U-lock and one chain, like the Kryptonite Keeper 785. I keep one wrapped around my top tube of my daily bike, then keep a U-lock on the rack at work. Nothing’s foolproof but I’ve seen/heard of too many cut cables.
