I’ve been dilly-dallying on selling my Soma Iggy wheelset, with a 5-speed Sturmey Archer. Fits former fixie frames (120mm spacing)

ParticipantThe Daily Rider sees lots of belt drive bikes and did a great job building me a wheelset that included a weird-sized electric motor hub. And they were highly accommodating of highly-specific thoughts regarding the build (read: my many neuroses!). It’s a bit of a haul from Fairfax, but would give you an excuse to visit one of the cool restaurants/bars on H St (my favorite, hands down, is the Queen Vic).

ParticipantI would recommend just building a new wheel rather than rebuilding the existing wheel with the new hub. At best you could reuse the rim, but it doesn’t look like the bike comes with great rims (Alexrims), so I’d just spend $50-$80 to get a good rim (e.g. Kinlin has some nice options in both wide and “old-school” [narrow] that are quite affordable) and then you have a spare rear wheel.

ParticipantI work with a guy who has a single speed Schindlhauer with a belt drive. He says he has to order their hub for replacement because of the special dropouts, with the only US distributor being a single guy in Wyoming, and that the belt drive tension wears out the hub so quickly they only last him about eight or nine months. Sounds both crazy and suspicious to me.

Why is that odd? I thought it was quite common, since the rear has to deal with the torque of the drivetrain.
These bikes do look really nice. I would be tempted if, yeah. I like that they give you a flip flop hub too – not common with belt drives afaik.

ParticipantYeah, radial lacing is pretty much the standard for rim-brake road front wheels. What looks a little odd is a front radial wheel with so many spokes. But the large hub flanges should accommodate the high spoke count radial lacing without risk of flange breaking.

Not willing to go di2 just to get hoods. Much prefer drops with hoods.
I’ve thought about getting a kinlin rim. I haven’t see what kind of weight difference there really is.
I’d not heard anything about the hubs wearing out. That sounds really odd and I’m not sure how that would happen. Given that I rode my S2 through the whole winter and several reviews say it is worthless in the winter I take it all in stride. I’m a low fuss rider.
