BREATH! it’s all in the breathing
you can be strong as hell, have all the gears in the world, but if you aren’t breathing… YOU WILL DIE!

This came up in another thread, and rather than hijack that one, this seemed to merit its own thread.
My wife does yoga, and says it’s all about the breathing. The type of exercise doesn’t even matter, as long as you’re breathing correctly. This got me thinking about cycling and now I’m wondering if I’m breathing while I’m riding my bike. I’m mostly riding my bike to commute these days, so I guess I’d be more interested in people’s thoughts on that, however I do like to get out and ride in a spirited manner on the weekends every once in a while. Should my breathing match the riding style?

What’s your technique for managing your air intake? Particularly interested in this as the seasons change and the air temperature gets cooler.

If you ever find yourself racing someone uphill in a spirited manner, shut your mouth and breath through your eyeballs to best shame your competition when you beat them to the top.

How can you eat properly if you don’t breathe because I need to eat a lot and breathe a lot and really the whole thing seems so confusing.

I think breathing is less important than pedaling. Seriously, if you have to coast to catch your breath, just hammer harder and take care of the breathing at the next natural break.

    Inhale slowly and exhale rapidly.

Or–as I’ve been doing lately while riding behind others cranking up the hill in front of me, blocking my way–whistle a little ditty.

Give it a couple of good pedal strokes to keep the momentum going and then pedal backwards briefly. Make sure your freehub is extra loud for maximum humiliation!

    Focus on the exhaling
