Yeah…that’s why I just said f&*% it” and bought legit winter riding shoes. With a thick pair of socks, they’re warm (enough) into the single digits, they’re completely waterproof, and I expect that they’ll last years, even with using them every day (they are Sidis, after all). Also, they look cool, while shoe covers absolutely do not.

Oh. My. God. I think my paycheck just got a few hundred dollars lighter. Plus if you take the cleat off and wear some ultra-tapered jeans, you can go to any Euro club you want…

Come on they’re spd compatible, no need to take off the cleats! ;)

The Specialized ones are cheaper, and look more like something you would see on the Death Star. http://www.specialized.com/us/en/ftr/shoes/mtb-shoes/defroster-trail

It seems to me you all are suggesting we violate Rule 34.

I mean, not that I’m not already violating Rule 34 regularly.

Well played, but I don’t actually want road shoes. I walk too much and don’t actually mind having MTB shoes. Anyway, my bike is officially a cross bike and effectively a commuter/errand bike and I don’t expect anyone who really cares about Rule 34 would call it a road bike.

I have been wearing Northwave boots and they aren’t much warmer than good covers. My feet don’t last more than an hour below 25F. But the fit is excellent for me; they are water proof; and the quality is top notch. Recently I decided to take advantage of a UK online store sale to buy the warmer edition. (They were around $180, if I remember right.)

I decided to go with the hi-viz model since they are almost exclusively used for commuting:

This is why my pedals take street shoes, too. I wear regular waterproof low duck boots when it gets below 15 degrees. Feet never get cold or wet. Waterproof socks fill the gap between the rain/snow pants and the shoes. In general, I find in weather that cold, ski clothes are the only way to go.

Yeah I’ve only worn (non cycling) winter waterproof boots on flat pedals the coldest and iciest days this winter. When it’s that cold and I’m lugging around 40lbs of studded tire bike I don’t find it makes it significantly slower, or less efficient – and it’s handy to be able to stick out a leg if I do slip on ice.

I’ve sort of given up on the bootie/shoe cover thing. I still use them to reduce the amount of moisture in my shoes or delay its onset, and keep me warmer, but since I don’t own any waterproof trousers, socks, gaiters, etc. there’s really no way I could stay dry without getting a more complete solution and I don’t really want to buy another set of bike shoes. I can also never keep my toes warm enough in shoe covers under 32F or so (haven’t tried chemical warmers yet).

My only qualm was the ankle opening being far too large. With the velcro strap pulled tight I still had excess material folded over. Not a huge concern since my tights cover this section, but if you plan to wear them with exposed legs in the rain don’t be surprised if water runs down into your shoes.

Interesting–I just got a pair of the RXLs (in size XL) and the ankle hole was just right. I never thought of myself as having particularly large ankles.
