On the bike trainer last night, part of what I did was pedal using one leg, alternating each minute.
I feel every one of those muscles today. Ow ow ow.
It’s amazing how isolating each leg makes you focus on the whole mechanics of the pedaling circle and the motions required to get you through that whole circle.
I’ve been doing this, too. It totally revealed how bad my mechanics are. If you had asked me before, I probably would have said that I had a nice, even pedal stroke. But I totally don’t. I’ve also been doing pretty much all my rides during the week concentrating on pulling up on the pedals. So much bang for the buck each time you pedal. Work on those hip flexors and stabilizer muscles, people!

That reminds me of this. http://www.cyclelicio.us/2012/juanjo-mendez-paralympic-cyclist/
I’m not ashamed to say that watching it brought a tear to my eye. (A few months old)

Don’t worry, it could have been worse. It could have been caught on video: http://iwannagetphysical.blogspot.com/2012/12/friday-funny-448-treadmill-fails.html
My favorite falling-off-a-treadmill video. From the “Mythbusters” episode where they were testing different methods of sobering up quickly. One technique they tried was “vigorous exercise”, which meant running on a treadmill. (It was easier to film a treadmill run than a bike ride.)

In hindsight, I should have done what Adam did and rolled off the back. A couple bruises but I would have been back to normal in a day or two. Instead, I grabbed up toward the handrails and held on. That kept me stationary while the belt acted as a grinder… on my knees. Just a couple seconds was long enough to do some damage.

ParticipantThe one-leg drill is good. So are spin-ups, where you crank up the cadence as high as you can without bouncing off the seat. It takes a lot of coordination. For safety reasons, it’s best to do this on a trainer or spin bike. If you try it outside, make sure you’re on a long straightaway with no hazards (i.e., no intersections or people darting into your path).
