So, I take it loud hubs are good…. All those times I have heard loud hubs buzzing around I never thought it was a plus.
Loudness is a status symbol of the wheel junkies, yeah
There is a little relationship between volume and number of engagement points (which has a little value but primarily for SS MTB) — but mostly I suspect it is just to be like the other guys (Chris King had notoriously loud MTB hubs).
The Hopes are a little obnoxious; Novatec or BHS hubs are a nice balance. But Hopes are bombproof.

ParticipantI’d rather not hear my bike. Riding my belt-drive fixie has taught me that a quiet freehub driven by a chain still makes noise; a fixed hub and a belt drive is completely silent, as far as I can tell. The only sound I can hear from the fixie is the tires, and slicks are pretty quiet.

ParticipantOh, it’ll start creaking soon enough, I am sure.
. As i am sure you know bikes don’t stay quiet for very many miles; the freehub is the least annoying bike noise IMO. (Also, it doesn’t matter what *you* think: this is cycling; only thing that matters what others think. There are plenty of ways to judge and loud hubs=expensive hubs is an easy one.)
But a unicycle …. Actually, nope; my unicycle is creaking and that is about as simple as it gets. (Probably just need to retorque some of the pedal/frame bolts.)

Heh. Bike noises are the worst. Sadly, I’m still not actually putting in any miles on the fixie: the tendinitis in my knees is improving very gradually, but mashing on a FG isn’t in my treatment plan! So for the time being, no additional creaking seems likely on that bike.
What others think is important, and not just in cycling. I’d like to believe, though, that what others think is less important to me than what I think. Sometimes it’s hard to tell!

ParticipantSilence is golden.
For me bikes are to be ridden not heard freehub included. The hub on my Reynolds wheelset buzzed until I cleaned and repacked it with thicker grease. 8K later no issues with the hub and still quiet.

ParticipantLoud buzzy hubs are the sound of quality. I was surprised by people complaining about that, but then I remembered “oh, right, fixie riders. The only point of which is to look down on everyone who isn’t a fixie rider, probably while wearing tight jeans and a stupid hat”.

I, despite what others may say, love your new hub more than anything else in the entire world. 😎

ParticipantMe too, Steve. They’re half the price of CK, $200 less than Whites and not that much heavier. Not to mention they’re easier to service than the Kings and will outlast the Whites.
I only wish I’d bought this second set sooner.

All y’all just jealous. (Just like I’m jealous of people that can fit into tight jeans. :p)

ParticipantI thought the “so expensive it’s loud” hub was cool until I rented one for a century and pretty much stopped coasting after 40 miles because it was awful. I like the silent “freewheel” on my fixie

I was thinking about buying more expensive, quieter hubs. This discussion definitely helped sell me on Hope hubs!!!

ParticipantIt sounds like the root problem here [for those that think loud hubs are awful] is too much coasting.
But as Vicegrip pointed out, you can quiet loud hubs. Just like you can put a quieter exhaust system on the new M3. Or at least I hope you can; we’re all set to start a collection fund for the guy at the end of the block.
